Jetpack Aviation Recreational Speeder – Flying motorcycle
Jetpack Aviation Recreational Speeder
$ 2 million for prototypes
A flying motorcycle powered by a jetpack? Sounds more like a flying object from Star Wars & Co. But just such a bike called the Jetpack Aviation Recreational Speeder is set to take to the skies in the near future.

One thing in advance: so far there have only been computer-generated images and animations of the Jetpack Aviation Recreational Speeder on the manufacturer’s website. At the moment, one can only imagine what the flying motorcycle might look like in reality. At first glance, however, the project does not necessarily seem to be a fake. The speeder has been available for pre-order on the manufacturer’s website since the beginning of 2019. Cost point: $ 380,000. If you are actually interested in buying a copy, you must transfer US $ 10,000 as a deposit when pre-ordering. However, it remains to be seen whether the bike will actually be implemented. After we reported on the possibility of pre-ordering a speeder in March 2019, the manufacturer has now announced that with the help of a funding project, two million US dollars are available for the development of a first prototype. This means that one should still be a long way away from specimens that can actually be purchased.

20 copies for private buyers
Not only thanks to the high price, the Jetpack Aviation Recreational Speeder, should it come, probably withheld from the average consumer. Only 20 copies can be purchased by private buyers. The remaining copies are planned for emergency services and the military. By the way, private buyers also receive a hat, a T-shirt, a key ring and a smaller model of the speeder.

Otherwise, the US manufacturer already gives some performance data. According to the manufacturer, the vehicle should bring 240 km / h to the speedometer. According to Jetpack Aviation, the weight should be around 100 kilograms, which means that the speeder should stay in the air for ten to a maximum of 22 minutes. An altitude of up to 4,500 meters should be possible. According to the manufacturer, the “flying motorcycle” in the version for private buyers should be controlled manually. The flight stability is to be established via a so-called “fly-by-wire” system. The manufacturer did not mention whether there will be an autopilot function that could be useful when landing or in dangerous situations, for example. It is highly likely that there will be such a semi-autonomous function. In any case, the version for the military and emergency services should also be able to fly autonomously.

A copy is said to cost $ 380,000.
There are also other minor differences between the two versions: The military version will be equipped with five turbines; in the version for private individuals there are only four. According to the manufacturer, the speeder is also airworthy with just three turbines. The on-board computer is intended to stabilize the flight behavior in the event of a turbine failure. The operation is intended for one person. The Jetpack Aviation Recreational Speeder, which runs on kerosene or diesel, should be airworthy even in light rain and at night.
Versions for private users and experts
For the private variant, at least in the USA, no pilot’s license is required. For this, the maximum speed is limited to 100 km / h. The kerosene tank also holds just 19 liters. A briefing from the manufacturer should be sufficient for moving the speeder. For the so-called “experimental” version, however, a pilot’s license is required. In addition, with the expert variant, you have to be present when the vehicle is completed. This is the only way to meet the requirements of the American aviation safety authority FAA for experimental aircraft.

Actually it was “flying motorcycle” Developed for the military and rescue services.
Whether such a vehicle will ever fly through the skies in Germany can at least be doubted based on the legal situation. Otherwise, the information that the manufacturer has disclosed so far is more likely to be classified under the “wild birds” category. At least we can hardly imagine that pilots will soar 4,500 meters into the air with the speeder. The pictures also show the unusual sitting or, in this case, lying position. In any case, it doesn’t look very comfortable. A similar, albeit not quite as adventurous, concept was recently used by the police in Dubai. Other concepts such as the Hoversurf Hoverbike S3, which looks like a mixture of a motorcycle and a drone, will soon venture into the air.

Finally, a quick note on the product name: in the opening credits of this article, we just couldn’t help making a connection to Star Wars. George Lucas’s feature film series also features a flying vehicle that experts refer to as a speeder bike.
