Kawasaki ZXR 400 R 1991

It might sound like a bluff or a daring bet; and yet, it is there: a Kawasaki ZXR of … 400 cm3. A cubic capacity very little in vogue here. So why did Kawa France decide to import it into France? Simply for the pleasure of sport.

Due to a too hollow character and a cruel lack of watts, the 4 cylinders 400 have never been very successful in our country. Conversely, this displacement is very popular in Japan. We see renowned sportswomen with a low volume that delight young Japanese: GSX-R 400, FZR 400 … CBR, Monster, VFR, SVS …).
The ZXR was conceived as a passion machine, without really any notion of profitability and big commercial success. Moreover, at almost 5 bricks, there is something to think about. That’s the price of a good 750, but the latter may not give you as much satisfaction; or rather not in the same way.

The pleasure is first and foremost visual. The Kawa is a beautiful machine, very sport, identifying itself in turn with the Stinger or the ZXR 7 endurance. Aggressive, racy, of flattering dimensions, the bike is easily confused with a higher category model. And as we never find a reference to the cubic capacity (except on the gray card), it is almost impossible to guess that it is about a “small” ZXR. Perfect illusion in the paddock. However, do not think that it is a machine that makes the habit but not the monk. No, she is a real sportswoman, who can dry more than one on the track. The chassis is beautifully designed, with an aluminum perimeter frame, a 41mm diameter inverted fork, an aluminum swingarm very similar to that of the Stinger, 300mm brake discs and wide shod rims. radial tires – 120/17 at the front and 160/17 at the rear.
KAWASAKI ZXR 400 RThe engine block is also not a plastic toy. It is a beautiful and compact machine, with 4 valves per cylinder and hyper square internal dimensions. Charged with 32 mm carbs, it is advertised for 65 hp and can take 14,500 rpm. In terms of performance, we are well above 160 hp / L. That’s it, you start to see where she’s going.

Contrary to the big displacements which impose a muscular behavior because of the big power, the 400 allows a cleaner piloting, in search of beautiful trajectories to take full advantage of the speed of passage in curve. The pleasure of drawing a nice curve then accelerating very early in the turn to exit quickly and well.

A little exhilarating bomb to drive, it’s nice and courageous for Kawasaki to offer us this ZXR 400. Beautiful, sporty, generous, the little green sports car is made for lovers of trajectories. Yes, well, OK, it is not cheap, but this kind of motorcycle is not considered by its price but by its qualities above all.
