It’s the end of a story, the farewell of an icon. The one who symbolized vintage at Kawasaki bows out. For the W800, Euro4 standards have sounded the death knell. After a long career that began in 1966 with the first W1, this roadster with the profile of an old Englishman could have been annoyed to be pushed towards the exit and slip away on the sly. It is not so. The Kawasaki W800 will leave at the end of 2016 with panache in this “Final Edition” livery.
Retro look as you wish, chrome metal mudguards, bevel gear distribution on a not very powerful but endearing twin, spoke rims, and a full relaxed look, the W 800 carries with it history and stands out from previous editions by this colorway “Brown Candy and Orange Candy Sunset”. A bit tight for a real tribute; a small selection of special pieces would have been welcome. A pair of conical exhausts to flatter the 773 cm3 twin or a saddle embroidered with a “Final Edition” logo would have delicately sublimated the Farewell.
People will especially remember a long line of machines with a certain charm. The W 650 had given a rebirth to the W1 in 1999. A time eclipsed, the apogee will arrive with the W 800 in 2011, exactly when the retro wave began to invade our microcosm. The discovery of this machine had also reaped a wide range of effects. Concluded in a very good way by testing its Cafe Style variation.
Goodbye, Miss W 800. Like so many others, Euro4 has condemned you. But let’s trust the manufacturer of Akashi to one day offer you descendants like Triumph did with its Bonneville T120 or Honda with its CB 1100 EX.
