The A2 license is like diapers, getting dumped or having a first m … job: you have to go through it, and there is no choice. Not a reason either for it to be sad with trapanelles on wheels. The market has understood this well, either with rewarding grindstones and good displacement … choked by the clamping box. Either with small engines that are starting to have the face. Have you seen the 390 Duke? The 500 Leoncino? The 401 Vitpilen ?
Kawa had been away from this installment for a while … to come back stronger, more convincing, more sugomi with the new Z 400.
Let’s see this Kawa as the worthy descendant of the Z 300. Although …. Rather like the naked version of the Ninja 400. Take off its clothing and you will find all the underside of the little sportswoman. Simple, easy, and not messy technical choice. Everything is there to have fun up to the limits imposed by the “young” license.
Powered by the 399 cc twin, the Z outputs 45 horsepower at 10,000 rpm. This represents 6 hp of gained since the 300. The couple is the big winner of the operation, with more than 1 mkg of garnered.
No surprises or disappointment to be expected in terms of performance: the roadster weighs only a kilo less than the sports car. Only the top speed will have to be revised downwards, the absence of protection playing its role of aerodynamic brake..
Before even entering the bacon of other roadsters in its sector, the 400 will have to be introduced into the Z family. It bears the name, it wants the style but … The fork crown gives a strange feeling. As much as the lines of the Z 300 made it a small Z variety, the 400 seems to be more sought after. The rear does not hesitate, with a fire modeled on that of the ZX-10R. Pretty, and yet for lack of identity. Considering that tactical members of recent history have adopted a Z lettering as their light signature. The Z 400 has its own style, a bit apart. Too bad the hoof has disappeared; the 300 hid better what we didn’t want to see.
Kawasaki has worked hard enough that we forget the origin of its underwear. By its silhouette of course, and by the welcome on board. A handlebar replaces the two bracelets and should offer a slightly more relaxed position; although the Ninja’s is already very livable. The speedometer is almost identical to that of the 650 / 900. Reasonable saddle height at 785 mm, 167 kilos ready to roll, general finesse, ultra flexible clutch, the medium Z is well received. Average ? Yes, we can no longer say small since the 125 joined the catalog. Hmmm, we would have liked a 12V outlet or at least a USB port. Most buyers will still have a phone to charge or an mp3 to plug in.
We expect from this machine everyday versatility and a dynamic that is both light and reassuring. The chassis goes in this direction. The tubular steel section frame is anchored to the engine, with a simple and sufficient layout for the expected performance. No zeal on the braking side, with one disc per wheel – 310 mm for the front and 220 for the rear, each pinched by a 2-piston caliper. These values are the same caliber as on the Ninja, but a marked increase from the Z 300, which was equipped with a 290mm front disc and 37mm diameter fork. That of the 400 goes to 41 mm.
Kawasaki has completed the Z family from start to finish. Well, almost. We would not be against descendants to the Z 1300. For now, one of the priorities is to make the 300/400 category more attractive. The A2 requirement will help this job, while the Z 400 roadster does efforts to find a place there. Derived from the Ninja, more powerful and successful than the former Z-300, it is also one of the most generously motorized, even going so far as to sniff the CB 500s. Nothing is won in the category but the machine will benefit from the spirit and the image Z. A significant asset in the balance.
