KTM 690 DUKE 3 2010

The DUKE – KTM’s most famous model is getting back to its 3rd generation. For this flagship model of the Austrian manufacturer, the years do not appear with the moderation. Still designed with testosterone and concentrated supermotar arsouille, the Duke’s heritage is now genetically modified in a cyber-terminator version.

690 by name, but 654 by engine capacity. The Duke recovers the last mono LC4 injection from the Supermoto (and its frame too). This transplant allows him to gain 10 horses while the cubage has only appreciated by 30 cm3. Well, it must also be said that the mill is not a mono plastic: very compact and light, powered by injection and 46 mm throttle, assistance with throttle opening, very compact cylinder head thanks to the presence of a single overhead camshaft, hollow intake valves, central balancing arm, clutch anti-dribble, better lubrication, loss of 3 kg compared to the 640, regulation by lambda probe and altimeter compensation. In short, beautiful mechanics, occupying the benchmark position for the category.

Approaching the roadster category (the Supermoto takes care of calming the competing supermotards), the wicked Austrian combines a facies as much tribal as brutal, an exacerbated and protruding plastic to the tunes of Superduke 990, a steroid engine and a chassis not fearful no more. The chrome-molybdenum trellis frame weighs only 9 kg. Presented on the Supermoto, the oscillating arm with visible ribs still has its small effect “reinforced factory walls”. The 48mm inverted fork ends with a single brake disc, the 320mm Brembo bitten by a 4-piston radial caliper. It doesn’t seem like much to you compared to the double disc arsenal found on the latest generation of roadsters …?!? Don’t worry – there aren’t even 16KTM 690 DUKE 30 kg to brake (148 kg ready to drive without gasoline). And to make it turn, it will be even easier with its optimized weight centering. Important detail at this level: the new position of the escapement. Plated under the frame in the very center of the machine, its location is ideal, its large volume allows it to retain maximum power, calm noise emissions, and comply with anti-pollution standards.

This featherweight embellished with a Katoche potato will make the Duke even more impactful than its previous version released in 1999. Its suspension travel revised downwards indicates an orientation more typical asphalt tongue than a mixture of tar / clay. At almost 9,000 euros, the Duke 3 is starting to hurt the wallet. But beware, you don’t have a bunch of marshmallows for that price. The Austrian does not hide her paroxysized SM side, relieved by a good 30 of tension under the cylinder head.
