BMW HP4, CBR 1000 SP, Ducati Superleggera … The world of sports begins with dreams and then continues with the dictatorship of time, power and efficiency. The market is suffering but the war within hypersports is still just as intense. In this shadow takes place another battle, discreet, even timid, where the protagonists of another vision of the sports bike meet.. The one that is light, fun, with figures without vertigo and fun in the pistons … or rather, in THE piston. This niche, that of mid-capacity sports cars, is the target of the RC 390. At its side in the starting blocks, the Kawasaki Ninja 300 R and Honda CBR 300 R.
As always with KTM, the design is part of the daring and shapes that crack in the retina. Based on the 390 Duke roadster, the RC exudes enough personality to totally eclipse its sibling’s presence. A little taste of RC8-R? Not much ; a zest in the spirit more than in the design. However, is it a Duke just dressed? No, Katoche wants a little sportswoman in the eyes as in the pognes. If we do not touch the engine, the chassis goes through the optimization box.
The heart of the RC 390 is its 373 cc single cylinder. A mechanical not lazy, with a very nice little character, a gniak more present in the towers, 44 horsepower and 3.6 mkg in the boiler.
The advantage of the machine is the weight. With 147 kilos, this RC promises to be taken like a bird between the squirrels. The chassis will follow. The differences with that of the Duke intervene at the level of the geometry of the rigid trellis frame, reworked for a better dynamism. The angle of inclination of the steering column and the shortening of the caster and the wheelbase contribute to the responsiveness of the RC models, much more comfortable on the circuit. Compared to the roadster suspensions, the travel has been reduced and the settings are more incisive. The 43mm WP inverted fork tubes are the same diameter as the 1190 RC8-R Superbike.
Even if it is not badged with its name, the braking was developed with Brembo. Considering the weight, the 300mm front disc with 4-piston radial caliper will have no difficulty slowing down the RC 390. A 230mm disc with 1-piston caliper will be more suitable for tightening a trajectory. The ABS is installed in series, and has not forgotten to be disconnectable for use on the circuit.
With its technical specificities, this RC 390 is presented as a small bomb of the A2 license. Anxious to crack the style, the KTM has offered a single-seater type rear part … but this trompe-l’oeil, because made of foam, can carry a passenger. A good opportunity to discover sport while having fun, before venturing towards the requirements of super and hypersports.
