Good design is not a question of price. But what about safety, fit and comfort when it comes to cheaper leather suits? MOTORRAD compared nine two-piece models.

Uli Holzwarth

06/07/2005

Two years have passed since the last test of mid-range leather suits. A sufficiently long period of time for the manufacturers of leather pelts to eliminate the weak points that have been criticized. Apparently, however, the criticism mostly fell on deaf ears, like that
shows a current comparison of nine leather suits in the price range up to 500 euros.
Some test candidates reveal the same weaknesses as the suits of the time. Sometimes this will still be
The connection zips of the jacket and trousers, which are extremely stressed in the event of a fall, are not fixed directly to the leather, but rather via a large textile stretch with the wafer-thin inner lining (Cima, Difi, Germas, Modeka and Revit). If the worst comes to the worst, there is a risk that the lining will tear, and instead of the leather, skin will sand the asphalt. Everyone can imagine the consequences of such faulty constructions.
The question arises why some manufacturers do not eliminate such safety deficiencies, which reduce the term »protective clothing« to absurdity. The suspicion is that they are very flexible
Choose connection method between jacket and pants to avoid defects in fit ?? at least with a short fitting in the shop ?? to conceal in part.
However, during the extensive driving tests carried out by MOTORRAD, ergonomic ailments quickly became apparent. Two testers with different clothing sizes were able to try this out on their own body on a fully disguised sports tourer and a half-boarded touring machine.
The key is a body-hugging, tight cut that is typical of the driver-
attitude on the motorcycle taken into account. This is only possible if the sleeves and legs are strong as well as the shoulders
are preformed, the back is long enough for a bent forward posture and stretch inserts are used sparingly but in the right places-
the. In the last test (MOTORRAD 10/2003) there was at least one high-flyer in terms of fit with the two-part FLM Race sold by Polo, this time no model is 100% convincing. A good cut does not cause any additional costs in production. Ultimately, the suits make the best figure on the motorcycle
with the slightest imperfections in fit of Corax and Louis (Vanucci), while the ergonomics at Modeka and BF clearly exceed the tolerance range (see box texts).
The BF suit also fails in the test criterion of safety, because all protectors clearly exceed the already very generous limit value of the CE standard in the shock absorption tests. It is also difficult to understand that the pockets at BF, Difi and Modeka are too small for a back protector in accordance with the CE standard. Almost scandalous: Germas equips its combination of GPS jacket and Cobra trousers with CE protectors according to the imprint, which do not contain the manufacturer’s information on shoulder and elbow protectors prescribed in the standard, and which
Knee protectors that are CE-tested have similarly miserable damping values as a piece of square timber.
When it comes to functionality, too, things are not always the best. The fiddly, extremely hooky operation of the connection zips that are available in some combinations in short and long versions is often annoying. In addition, some pants lack the extremely practical, zip-lock outer pockets for ignition keys and other small items. And only Corax and Hein Gericke have a removable and washable inner lining.
In view of the intoxicating presentation of some models, prospective buyers of off-the-peg leather suits should always insist on a seat test on their own motorcycle.
If you have no experience with tight-fitting protective clothing, you can also try on much more expensive, body-fitting leather suits from well-known manufacturers, even if your wallet does not allow this. This is the best way to get one
A feeling for the ideal fit.

Protector test

MOTORRAD checked the shock absorption values of the
Protectors used in leather combinations based on the CE standard
1621-1 / 1621-2 put to the test by
SaS-Tec company in Markgroningen. Joint protectors only pass the test according to the CE standard if the recorded residual force values do not exceed an average of 35 kilo-newtons (kN). No impact may exceed 50 kN. Except for the protectors from BF and Germas (knee protector), all tested protectors complied with the generously dimensioned CE standard. It is noticeable that hard-shell joint protectors are often used
have a steeper increase in force and poorer damping values than good counterparts made of flexible foam.
