The battle marks on the heavily rebuilt Yamahas show that things are going very well there. An anti-hopping clutch works in the slightly sanded clutch basket.

Richard made extensive changes to the chassis. At the rear, a spring strut from K-Tech is now working on a self-made deflection, shifting is done using a quickshifter.

Richard also did a lot on the engine. Performance: secret. Note: Richard is not afraid of the 100 HP of the RS 660.

Little super athletes: what the new sports class looks like
New middle class athletes
Middle class throws itself in shell
After the Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the Aprilia RS 660, the range of mid-range super athletes is further filled with the new Yamaha R7. What else can come?

The excitement about middleweight super athletes has been increasing since the release of the Aprilia RS 660 again limitless. Especially after Yamaha with the R6 removed the last four-cylinder mid-range athlete from the regular program Has. A new generation of super sports cars with 600 to 700 cubic meters from two cylinders is expected. Weight around 180 kilograms ready to drive, power around 100 hp, price: affordable. Yamaha stood there with its successful model MT-07 quasi since its appearance in 2014 in an unspoken duty and delivers with the new R7, remains rather defensive in terms of performance. In the following we will clarify how you can still score strongly on the track with 700 cubic meters and what could come from the manufacturers in the near future.
Private citizen with a lead of six years
Andy Palmer from California has a six-year lead over Yamaha. With the appearance of the MT-07, baptized FZ-07 in the USA in 2014, the racing driver began to build a lightweight racing roll from the Yamaha. He already has experience with it as he holds some racing records on conversions of the Suzuki SV 650.

Andy James has fulfilled his dream of a Supersport MT for a long time and offers conversion kits.
Best of all: he offers his conversion kit for sale or even completely converted Yamahas. The kit consists of a full fairing, based on the MotoGP racer for $ 950, plus a mounting kit for $ 299 is required. Optionally, there is also a conversion with an R6 fork and correspondingly radially attached brake calipers (see pictures). If that is too expensive for you, you can rebuild the original fork with cartridge kits. There is no need to cross the pond for this, such parts are also available in Germany. A treat is an anti-hopping clutch specially developed for Andy von Yoyodyne for $ 850.

Winner in the German Twin Trophy
Richard Platzer also uses exactly this coupling in his converted MTR-07, which he successfully uses in the German Twin Trophy: it was 1st and 3rd place and 7th place in the championship in 2020. Richard installs the fork and brake of the R6 in his MT-07 conversions, cartridges from K-Tech upgrade the fork. He builds the matching triple clamps himself. While Yamaha uses a conventional spring strut with adjustable preload and rebound in the rear of the R7, Richard relies on a fully adjustable spring strut from K-Tech that is bolted to a self-designed deflector. In addition to the anti-hopping clutch developed by Andy, Richard also uses his fairing kit and can push a Yamaha to the starting line that weighs around 160 kilos with 10 liters of fuel in the tank. The engineer does not give exact values, nor does he give any performance data. He only gives two pointers to his tuning measures. On the one hand, the configuration of the series with the almost horizontally installed injection is not optimal in terms of gas flow, but in principle the engine can sustain significantly more power than Yamaha is currently allowing it to press. On the other hand: Richard is calmly looking forward to the new RS 660 and its 100 hp output.

Market check
Yamaha is running in open doors with the new R7 based on MT-07. With the CBR 650 R and the 500, Honda shows how small super sports cars with bare offshoots can function on the market. Aprilia claims this throne with the RS 660, supported by the new one Tuono 660.
Card design
In this drawing, designer Kardesign shows what a new Kawasaki Ninja 700 could look like. It remains to be seen whether the Z650 engine has the potential.
Kawasaki already has a corresponding model up and running, but the Ninja 650, with its currently 68 hp, carries the red lantern in terms of performance. Triumph could be with the 660 engine also attack. The model name Daytona is still strong. It is questionable whether BMW would like to adapt the F-engine accordingly, would be the substructure S 1000 RR but useful. Supersport icon producer Ducati shouldn’t be forgotten. That there below the Super sport 950 and Panigale V2 a smaller sharpener is coming, but is to be doubted. A peregrine falcon chick with half Hayabusa engine would be an interesting move by Suzuki. But that would also be here Two-cylinder turbo concept still ready. KTM practically invented the potent twins of the modern age. A KTM 790 RC or KTM 890 RC would be logical. What such a model could look like has Kramer Motorcycles for the racetrack already practiced.
Card design
The 790 and 890 twins from KTM have a lot of oomph, an RC version might look like this.
Conclusion
Yamaha got a big ball rolling in 2014 with the MT-07 and has been giving the Twin new momentum with new model variants for years. For a long time, Yamaha did not dare to go back to the great racing history of the R6 and R7 with the Twin. The successes of the Tenere and Tracer 700 prove, however, that the technical basis is right and the now confirmed new R7 with twin will certainly cause a sensation again – especially in terms of price.
