The Y2K was a very little known machine … until it appeared in the movie Torque. Those who have seen it will surely not have lasting memories of the film; but all are questioned about this strange motorcycle that appears at the end of the feature film. A much more interesting and impressive machine in reality.
If it weren’t for this disproportionate wheelbase, we wouldn’t linger when we saw it across the street. Its silver gray color gives it a certain class, the black livery a real elegance, but the design of the machine is not a very thorough research. Its main stylistic identity trait is its strange facies. In fact, one would almost have the impression of being in the presence of a calf. If we focus on the exhaust and the swingarm, we quickly understand that the engine installed there is nothing conventional.
“Are there any horses in there?” Yes sir. Just over 300; and the red zone starts at 54,000 rpm. Tilt! What to stay on the ass. Between the 2 enormous aluminum beams of the frame, the designer Christian Travers installed a helicopter turbine. A gas plant that gives you 59 mkg of torque, takes 4 times more turns than a Yamaha R6, and catapults you beyond 400 km / h with an absolutely sublime noise. The hayabusa and the ZX-12R no longer have to fight: they are pulverized by the Turbine Superbike.
It would be rude to operate this machine without first dwelling on its top-notch gear. Ohlins suspensions, carbon rims, Ferodo brakes, rearview via a camera in the taillight … we’re dealing with seriousness.
THEThe potential of the turbine is such that it was necessary to imagine a new geometry for the oscillating arm. The fixing point is placed very high and in the same place as the gearbox output pinion. Without this, the Y2K would spend its time with its nose in the air before destroying itself..
On board, the driving position is not surprising – it feels like any sports car. Contact ! The machine wakes up and immediately puts you in the scent. What a racket! We would be on an airplane engine that it would be quieter. Really impressive … We freak out even more; what will happen next ?
Let go of the brake and the automatic will take care of the rest. With a minimum of recklessness, we can afford to give gas. We shoot … and we wait. Not long. The turbine takes turns smoothly then pushes the Y2K with simply incredible force. A giant elastic band that stretches harder and harder without knowing any limit. Crazy ! A more energetic flick of the right wrist and the bike surprises more than reason. She leaps like a feline without the slightest abruptness, and contrary to what one might think, remains riveted to the road, all in a striking comfort and without the slightest vibrations..
By design and engine, the Y2K is a blend of strength and unreality. An authentic adrenaline machine that makes you blow all the hoses in your brain. What to live an experience very close to the fantastic.
