Market reports - The motorcycle market remains in the red - The motorcycle market remains in the red

Calamitous weather, one less working day, a gloomy atmosphere … It was to be suspected, the motorcycle market has not managed to match the records set in recent years and in January 2009 showed a drop of 26.8%. Balance sheet.

The motorcycle market remains in the red

From a weather point of view, the month of January 2009 in France was particularly freezing: the long period of cold, with negative temperatures and snow that holds on the roads, therefore undoubtedly participated in the decline recorded by the market of the French motorcycle.

While January 2009 had the same number of "dealership opening" days as January 2008 (22) and one less working day (21 versus 22), the market for motorized two-wheelers of "125 cc and more" recorded a reduction in the number of registrations of -26.8%.

But the weather is certainly not the only cause: besides the less working day, we can also mention the brilliant results of the market in recent years, difficult to maintain … Without forgetting of course the current difficult socio-economic context.

At the very beginning of the year, therefore, even Yamaha, the unmistakable leader (?) In "125 and over 125 cc", shows a drop in sales of -12.5%. Nevertheless, the start of the Blues is far from being missed since Yam ‘carved out in January a market share greater than that achieved over the whole of 2008: 20.24% of PDM in January 2009 against 19.65 % on all 2008.

Honda, for its part, can have a smile: + 5.6% registrations compared to January 2008 and a monthly PDM which reaches 16.7%. Thank you CB1000R and CBF125! And Kawasaki is not left out, since the Greens see their sales decrease by -17.3% but their PDM increase: from 8.35% in January 2008, it goes to 9.43% in January 2009.

Finally among Japanese manufacturers, only Suzuki experienced a disappointing first month from all points of view: -39.8% compared to sales for the first month of 2008 and a market share that just exceeds 10% (10.54% exactly, against 13.34% in 2008).

The results of other manufacturers are just as disparate … Exceptional, the Chinese Jonway again panics the meters with an increase of + 180% (!), While the Europeans Triumph, Peugeot, Ducati and Gas Gas correctly limit the damage, just like Harley-Davidson.

On the other hand, Piaggio’s sales plummeted by 64.3%, ie a PDM halved. A log due in part to the success of MP3 LTs, which are not counted in the "two-wheeled" stats. The scooter specialist is accompanied in his fall by his compatriot Aprilia (-61.2%), the Taiwanese Sym and Kymco (respectively -48.2% and -66.1%) and the Korean Daelim (-67.1% ).
