Market reports - The motorcycle market still expanding -

The good health of the two-wheeler market was confirmed in February: when sales of large-displacement vehicles increased by 8.1%, those of 125s increased by 32.7%. Yes … everything is increasing !

Despite the cold and snow in February, the French flocked to the concessions…

The 125 market maintained its dynamism in February (+ 32.7% compared to February 2005) with an impressive score of 4,675 units sold. And it is again Yamaha which takes the lion’s share with more than 23% of the market.

The large-engine market is also doing well with an increase of + 8.7% and a total of 7,181 vehicles sold. Kawasaki and Triumph continue to prosper but we are especially witnessing the awakening of Honda (+ 64.2%), tied for 2nd with Yamaha.

Market 125

The small-displacement market continues to grow, but unlike January when all manufacturers posted higher results compared to 2005, February marks the drop in sales of two brands with a "single" offer: KTM and Piaggio.

The Austrian and its small off-roaders suffered more from the difficult weather conditions in February than the other brands. In the end, KTM shows results down 12% with 13 units less compared to last year.

Would Italian scooters begin to bear the brunt of the years? Piaggio is losing in any case many market shares: 16.2% this month against 23.7% last year (read).

Even though the X8 remains second in sales, it is far behind Yamaha’s Xmax. As for its big brother, the X9, it now sees the Pantheon and the Skycruiser following it very closely … The situation is comparable with Vespa, whose Granturismo and LX have disappeared from the Top 15.

For its part, the giant Honda is experiencing a shy month of February, increasing its sales by only 3.8% in a market yet in full expansion. The results are similar for the French Peugeot which stagnates at 185 sales, despite a slight renewal of interest from the French for the Elystar.

At the bottom of the table, Daelim (+ 560%) is behind Kymco (+ 1.3%) while Aprilia’s results increase in line with the market. Its Atlantic 125 is in 15th place in sales.

Suzuki and its Burgman are also following the progress of the market. However, this is not enough for them to ward off MBK whose sales have doubled! From 171 units sold in February 2005, the French rose this year to 352. Over the first two months, it is even on par with the Japanese.

Another manufacturer to double its sales (+ 118%) but in much larger volumes: Yamaha which has made an excellent start to the year. Its Xmax is at the top of sales while the Majesty and DT are holding firm. Only the little YBR sees its sales cut in half

Large engine market

The big cube market is still doing just as well with three brands that stand out from the rest: Honda, Kawasaki and Triumph. These are the only three locomotives on the market, the other players being below the overall increase.

Honda, not content to regain third place at Kawasaki, now equalizes Yamaha. However, in terms of sales scores by model, the world number one is still as discreet: only the Hornet 600 and the CBR1000R are placed in the top 15 with respectively 247 and 112 sales..

But that would be to forget its wide range and its discreet but efficient models which ultimately total 1,269 sales. We still note the good score of the Deauville 700 (read), 17th in sales this month with 97 copies sold.

Kawasaki takes the lead in sales by model thanks to its Z750 (396 sales) well supported by the ER-6 (n and f). Similarly, Triumph continues to expand (+ 29.1%) and is now eyeing the seventh place of Harley-Davidson. The American, however, is resistant to weather conditions unsuitable for its "outdoor" products, which the Italian Ducati has not managed to do (-18.9%).

Yamaha is experiencing a similar drop in sales (-14.8%) despite the good performance of its Fazer 600, Tmax, R1 and especially its new R6 (187 sales). The supersport with three tuning forks has a better month than the Tmax !

With a 19.8% market share and 1,422 motorcycles sold, Suzuki still holds the upper hand … But for how long? The GSR fails to equalize the sales of its direct competitors and even the Bandit remains behind the three bestsellers despite its eye-catching price.

Slightly below the evolution of the market, BMW (+ 5.3%) remains unfazed, as does Piaggio (+ 4.7%) which has its very specific niche. But in the standings, Aprilia threatens with 85 sales !

Finally among the smallest manufacturers, Moto Guzzi sold 57 motorcycles, Beta 46, Buell 32, Husqvarna 28 and Voxan 14.
