Market reports - The motorcycle market on the basis of a new record? -

Not content with having beaten its registration record in 2007, the French motorcycle market is starting the new year at a breakneck pace: + 9.7% for the 125s and above all + 16.9% for the big cubes ! Assessment and analysis of France which sends gas.

For the first month of 2008, the motorcycle market in France was dynamic: 15,316 vehicles were registered in January, an increase of 13.6% (for an equal number of working days) compared to January 2007, which had already recorded an increase of 7.4% compared to 2006! (read).

But this year, the 125 saw an increase in their sales half as much as in January 2007. Would the French have been less courageous and preferred to stay a few more weeks in their car or in the RER, before investing – like many last year – in a scooter 125 ?

On the other hand, motorcyclists – holders of the A license – were more likely to invest in French dealerships last month: all manufacturers (except KTM) posted higher results compared to January 2007 !

Market 125: 6,708 units (+ 9.7%)

2008 is off to a good start for all 125, as this market recorded an increase in sales of 9.7% compared to January 2007, itself up 21.5% compared to January 2006.

But looking at the results of each manufacturer, we see that great disparities exist within the market 125: all brands are not housed in the same boat. Let’s start with those who have had a difficult start to the year…

At the top of the rankings with 1,151 registrations against 1,423 last year, Yamaha saw its market share drop by five points! In January 2008, the tuning forks brand only represented 17.16% of MSRs, the result of a 19.1% drop in sales in a growing market.

However, the success of Xmax cannot be denied, on the contrary, with no less than 543 registrations last month! Yam’s GT scooter inflicts a new snub on its competition since the Honda S-Wing and Suzuki Burgman, 2nd and 3rd respectively, did not exceed 300 sales each.

But the Majesty, once so brave with 443 sales in January 2007 compared to 171 last month, is the first victim of East Asian scooters. Although stable, sales of the YBR are threatened by other small "exotic" 125s: Sky Team’s Dax and Daelim Roadwin in particular, which are at the end of their lighthouse in the monthly top 15. !

Suzuki also posted a drop in sales (-6.9%) and a loss of one point in terms of PDM (now 5.26%). With 289 sales, its Burgman defends itself well, but the VanVan (43 immats) and the Address (almost non-existent) did not allow the Japanese manufacturer to attract as many customers as last year..

The biggest fall can be attributed to Peugeot Motocycles, whose sales plummeted by 34.9% in January 2008. It was not easy for the French manufacturer to maintain its pace of last year, with its impressive +174, 5% in January 2007 !

Last month, its Satelis (125 standard and compressed models) registered only 227 registrations, barely more than the only standard version last year … A difficult awakening for the Sochaux manufacturer, who had managed to place his Satelis in third place in the 2007 ranking of best-selling scooters…

The last to appear in the top 10 manufacturers with a negative trend, Aprilia sold 158 models of 125 in January 2008. A score down 25.5% compared to 2007 over the same period, due in part to the poor result of sound Atlantic.

Twelfth last year with 125 registrations, Noale’s scooter sold 86 copies last month. A downturn that his Piaggio cousins also experienced, but to a lesser extent…

With 1,132 sales in January 2008 compared to 1,167 in January 2007, Piaggio is indeed posting a 3% drop in sales. In full reorganization, its range of scooters is trying to find its sales volumes of the past years.

While its X7 (replacing the X8) and its 81 immats still do not appear in the top15, its XEvo (213 sales) has still not caught up to the pace of the X9 (273 sales in January 2007). Like last year, the winter prompted Piaggio customers to buy a "safer" front-end MP3 without ABS. And if the three-wheeler failed to match its score last year, it remains Pontedera‘s bestseller. !

We also note a good performance from the Piaggio Liberty, registered in 122 units. A special package delivered to La Poste postmen ?

Honda represents the "apart" case of the month: the Japanese giant beats its own score of January 2007 (701 sales against 653, ie an increase of 7.4%), but its progress remains below the overall evolution of the market (+ 9.7%). Thus, Honda’s PDM in France is slightly lower and remains just above 10%..

An unflattering figure compared to the 24.9% that Honda totaled in January 2005: at the time, its Varadero trio, its new CBR and its Pantheon were standing behind the Piaggio X8 and X9, well supported by the Lead 100 (read).

In 2008, the Varadero (read) remains the only 125 "high-end" roadster and still totals 214 sales. Likewise, the S-Wing (whose sales are still cumulative with those of the old Pantheon) is at the top of the list with 296 sales. But the CB125RR and the absence of the new Lead 110 are detrimental to the world number one.

In the good results, we note the + 23.5% of MBK whose number of registrations has approached 300! His Skycruiser is placed in 12th place in the ranking of the best sales of 125 in France with 115 registration. Seventh in the January 2008 ranking, the French manufacturer is just behind Peugeot and … Kymco !

Because the "real" locomotives of the market are, once again, the "small" manufacturers and the "others", or rather the importers in France of "gigantic" manufacturers … Kymco in the lead, therefore, with the registration of 340 125cc models representing a little more than 5% of the monthly PDM.

Its Agility model – a small urban 125 scooter that lives up to its name – sold 183 copies last month and allows the brand to make an impressive 132.9% forward jump compared to January 2007 !

His compatriot Sym experienced a similar progression (+ 127.4%) in a slightly lower volume: 240 immats recorded in January 2008. His GTS (109 immats) failed at the gates of the top15, but we can expect to see him reappear soon !

Finally, Daelim recorded a good increase in its sales (+ 81.4%) after registering a peaceful + 8% over the whole of 2007 … The Korean manufacturer is he about to climb a second walk after that climbed in 2006 to be among the main players in the world of 125 in France? To watch in the next reports Site !

In January 2008, the group of "other manufacturers" consisted in order of Sky Team (149 immats), Hyosung (120), Jonway (120), CF Moto (113 small e-charm sccoters!), Yiying (103), KTM (76), Baotian (75), Vento (74), Gilera (67), Keeway (55), Derbi (53), Revatto (50), Hanglong (47), Kinroad (44) and Jinlun (39).

Market over 125: 8,608 units (+ 16.9%)

For large cubes, almost all meters are green! No jealousy, everyone (except KTM) can be satisfied to have beaten their numbers from last year. However, we can always distinguish between those who are above the market trend and those who are below….

Before that, note the decline in sales of KTM last month, exceptional in the market. The Austrian manufacturer suffered a 6% drop in registrations compared to a month of January 2007 which had been more cheerful for him.

Always at the head of sales of "+ 125", Suzuki is one of those limiting the rise of the market. Despite its + 2%, the Japanese manufacturer thus saw its market share slide by more than 2.5 points: 18.73% for the month of January 2008.

Like Yamaha in 125, Suz nevertheless benefits from the French best seller in "more than 125", in this case the Bandit 650 and its 506 immats. The "nice" GSX-R 1000 is doing its best with 132 sales, but the "nervous" GSR has a hard time with 195 sales in January 2008 compared to 268 last year. Finally, note that in January 2007, sales of DRZ 400 SM and V-Strom 650 had exploded…

Yamaha ends the first month of the year with an increase in sales which would have been perfectly adequate (10%) if the whole market had not progressed so much … Thus the "blues" lose a large point of PDM : 16.76 last month.

The Yamaha models are a tone below the leaders: with 271 and 267 respective sales, the Fazer 600 and the Tmax are not a third of Yam’s volume, while the ER-6 and Z750 are two-thirds of Kawa’s. !

With a 5.6% increase in sales, Honda is in the same situation as the two previous Japanese: its PDM rose from 13.78% in January 2007 to 12.45% last month. Newly landed in dealerships, the CBF600 is in 15th place in monthly best sales, just behind the CBF1000. Will we soon see the little one overtake the big one? ?

The Hornet made a better start to the year in 2008 than in 2007: logical since last year, a new 600 was expected! We also note the good performance of the CBR600RR: with 131 registrations, the "red" Supersport is only one sale away from the best "yellow" Superbike. !

With nearly four copies, Harley-Davidson has made the same number of deliveries: 384 this year against 380 last year. As a result, the American’s PDM falls below 5% … The calm before storm XR1200 ?

For its part, Ducati has registered 9 motorcycles more than in January 2007: 158 against 149. But its increase of 6% does not prevent it from descending below 2% of PDM. Borgo Panigale’s best seller in January 2008 is the 1098 (32 immats) ahead of the Hypermotard (28) and the new 848 (24).

Among the Mostros, the arrival of the 696 could well revive sales in France … Yes, but when? Ducati, which did not wish to comment on its 2007 results in France on Site (read our), spares the suspense…

On the side of the "real" greens – those whose sales AND market share are increasing – Kawasaki logically takes the lead, even if its ER-6 / Z750 duo has been stung by the Bandit….

The increase in registrations at Kawa (+ 58.4%) is impressive but easily explained: it is above all due to the shortage of Z750s in dealerships last year. Finally, the "greens" obtained in January 2008 a PDM of 14.68% and thus regain their level of January 2006 (15.1%, read). Kawasaki thus asserts its 3rd place in the 2007 manufacturer ranking.

After a slump last December, BMW is back to its usual 5th place. In January 2008, the R 1200RT (243 immats) received the effective support of the R1200GS (178), whose 2008 model is already available in dealerships! The Bavarian manufacturer has therefore totaled 815 registrations last month, an average of 9.47%.

For its part, Triumph remains a good distance from BMW, while progressing by 40.2% compared to January 2007. The Hinckley firm is entering a year which will have to be that of the confirmation of its Street Triple: well started, it found 199 new buyers in France last month !

Exceptional, the increase of 1528% (!) Of Hyosung’s sales is undoubtedly due to a series of "house" registrations: the motorcycle activity of SIMA was taken over at the end of the year by Frederic Fourgeaud, while the accessories section went to Franck-Christopher Javos and his wife Maïte … the granddaughter of Marcel Seurat !

As a result Aprilia, which for once exceeded Piaggio and its maxi scooters, does not appear in the Manufacturers website table! However, we can expect this beautiful Italian battle to intensify in 2008 and see the manufacturer of Noale reinvest in the top 10 manufacturers in France, thanks to its Shiver 750 (24 immats) and its Mana 850 (18) which finally land in concessions.

The "others" saw a 25.6% increase in activity in January 2008. Among them, we can count in the order Aprilia with 97 vehicles, Piaggio 96, Gas Gas 92, Beta 89, Gilera 86, Moto Guzzi 74 , Husqvarna 62, Buell 56, Scorpa 45, HM 40, Kymco 35, Sherco 33, Peugeot 24 and finally MV and Montesa 22 each. At the same time, SIDAM registered 3 Voxan.
