Mash 400 Scrambler 2016

Quietly and surely making his way on the market, Mash intends to take his share of the pie in the current neo-vintage trend. We believe in the retro roadster, the cafe-racer, the hipster bread, but the thing this year is the Scrambler. Mash draws his own, closely derived from the Five Hundred.

No show off, except for this rather nice orange color, this scrambler gives pride of place to simplicity. From near and far, it really smells of retro, the fine mud crackling on the hot metal, the sweat of the knee when starting up. Not the kind of bike for “show off”; but for those who want a fun, accessible, fashionable machine but not a victim.
Like many of its congeners, this machine compromises a few codes of the authentic scrambler. No pot raised as is fashionable and to gain ground clearance. This choice is validated by the preservation of the calves of a passenger. However, the 125 of the same name has enhanced its line…
Fortunately, the honor is except with the spoked rims, the studded tires (moderate) and the cross handlebars. A race plate above the headlight, a grille in front of it, bellows on the fork and we believe it. Its large mono finned and the extremely simple design of its frame transport us directly to the first color films. She’s not kidding vintage, she is.

The styling is there, highlighting the differences with the Five Hundred. The exhaust line changes, ending with a megaphone type silencer. The Siemens injection has been somewhat revised but is not free from defects. The 400 Scrambler wins a lot of black, less enveloping fenders, a more refined rear, completed by a small round light and suspensions more suited to off-road skirmishes. The fork goes from 35 to 41 mm while the shocks are revised to withstand various trudges.

The finish will not be enough to compete with more noble machines, and much more expensive. For some, this will pass for Chinese-level quality; normal, the bike comes from there. For others, it will give it a personality “in its own juice”. We will naturally want to start with the action of the thumb but …. It would be depriving ourselves of the charm of a good old kick start that the Mash offers. She has this ability to introduce you to what was the norm decades ago. The north board informs you of the essentials, with its two needle counters, and no more. Fuel gauge, hinged cap, ABS … are to be forgotten.

The charm takes place once on the way. The mono, with distant Honda origins, is not very powerful with its 27 horsepower. He knows how to please other than with large watts. Distributing his character, this little push of the piston that only monos know how to hit, this joy that makes him endearing. Don’t hit him in the squash. Its claims are limited, and the top speed is far from honoring. Think instead of the early mornings of fog and clods of earth that you will want to lift when going on a trip. This engine dates from another time, simple in design as well as in use. It will just be necessary to think of a maintenance a little more tight.
A drum brake at the rear is almost as common as a K7 walkman. The front is more contemporary, with a 280 mm disc bitten by two pistons; and an aviation hose please !

You will understand, the Mash 400 Scrambler is intended to be a classic machine, the opposite of technological outbidding and big marketing operations. It is a simple pleasure machine, able to turn away from the road and have a good laugh. Admittedly, there is no Ducati or BMW emblem on the tank. And conversely, no need to split a chrome over 5 years to ride vintage. Without a real competitor, almost the only one in its category, the 400 Scrambler is one of the most charming machines in this range of displacement. Its price is one of its most impactful assets.
