From August 11th to 13th, 2017, the International German Motorcycle Championship took place at the TT Circuit Assen / NL: Superbike 1000, Supersport 600, Supersport 300 and sidecars as well as various cups provided entertainment for the spectators.

Last rehearsal before the big show

The International German Motorcycle Championship IDM has turned into the second half of the season. From August 11 to 13, 2017, the highest German series in motorcycle road racing took place in Assen. Thanks to the decisions, one thing is certain: the IDM will remain exciting over the last few meters, and another motorcycle brand will be added in 2018.

The start in Assen was also a dress rehearsal for the IDM Superbike 1000. The top class has a guest appearance at the Superbike World Championship at the Lausitzring this coming weekend.

Almost 4,000 spectators followed the races outside the German borders. While the super athletes and the sidecar faction have a break until the next event in Oschersleben from September 1 to 3, 2017, the IDM Superbike 1000 will travel on to the Lausitzring, where it will take part in the Superbike World Championship from August 18 to 20 will hold two races.

Five brands are represented in the top class IDM Superbike 1000: BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. The spectators in Assen saw four IDM classes and races in the Yamaha R6 Dunlop Cup, the Twin Cup and the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 Cup. The fans came very close to the drivers during the pit walk, the autograph session and the public press conferences.

Especially for the IDM leader Markus Reiterberger, the start in the Superbike World Championship is a hot topic. The 23-year-old Bavarian is fighting to return to the world’s elite. The two-time German Superbike champion had already reached the top, team-internal problems and a back injury prompted him to retire after a year. He found his reputation in the local IDM Superbike and in his old team.

At the Lausitzring, the star of the VanZon Remeha BMW team wants to show that he is one of the world’s best again. Reiterberger takes on a double role in Lusatia: once as a guest driver in the Superbike World Championship and once again as the overall leader in the two races of the IDM Superbike 1000. He extended his points lead in Assen with two wins.

His biggest rival Danny de Boer, who is also his team-mate, was hot on his heels in the first race, but a broken chain thwarted the Dutchman’s ambitions to win. Florian Alt on the works Yamaha crossed the finish line in second, followed by Pepijn Bijsterbosch. With him, a local driver made it onto the podium. Reiterberger won the second run ahead of de Boer and Bijsterbosch, who said: “Standing on the podium in Assen is a must.”

Five motorcycle brands are represented in the IDM top class: BMW, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha. With the exception of Kawasaki, at least one rider made it into the top ten in both races. The fast lady Lucy Glockner, who brought Kawasaki out of the trough, fell this time in both races, whereby she fell innocently in the second run.
A competitor had lost oil and the Saxon had slipped on it like four other drivers.

In the IDM Supersport 600, Kevin Wahr from Nagold had to take a sensitive damper. If he got the full number of points for the first run, the second race was zero. Clouds of smoke rose from his Yamaha. Reason: A corner connection to the oil cooler had a leak. True had to leave the race. As a result, championship leader Thomas Gradinger from Austria now has such a big lead that under normal circumstances no opponent can snatch the title away from him.

There was a change in leadership in the small Supersport 300 class. Jan-Ole Jahnig replaced his team-mate Maximilian Kappler at the top. And behind that, too, there was plenty of movement in the Yamaha-dominated class.

Troy Beinlich won the second race and displaced Sophia Liebschner from third place in the table. Although the field of drivers is still small, the junior class is very interesting and has a bright future ahead of it.

In the coming year, another manufacturer besides Yamaha and Kawasaki will be involved. KTM has shown great interest and wants to get on board.

In the IDM Sidecar, the Markus Schlosser / Thomas Hofer team achieved a double victory in Assen, which the locals Bennie Streuer / Gerard Daalhuizen could not prevent. The Dutch are also the defending champions, but the duo from Switzerland was simply unbeatable.

A motorcycle world championship race has been held at the TT Circuit Assen every year since 1949. The circuit is currently the only World Cup track that has been specially designed for two-wheelers. The curves are partly very elevated. The IDM is also a regular guest on the fast TT Circuit. From August 11 to 13, 2017, Germany’s highest motorcycle road racing series fought again for points on the ring, which is one of the most beautiful in Europe.
