Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 and Husqvarna Svartpilen 701 caught as Erlkonig
Husky design and KTM technology
KTM is slowly getting serious about Husqvarna. With the Husqvarna Svartpilen 701 and Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 models, with the completely independent Husky design for proven KTM technology. These two contain the 690 single from Duke, other similarities are coincidental.
Is it the driver? Or is it the mirror? Is it the headlight or the license plate holder to blame? Anyway, it’s probably the combination of everything. In any case, the fact is: Now, in full street legal series regalia, the Swedish Piles from Austrian production have lost some of their intoxicating effect. The really big kick is gone. But for the sake of fairness it should be said: It always works that way. Hardly any study saves its informal StVZO-free charm one-to-one on the road; all of them are more or less entangled in the jumble of paragraphs beyond pure design theory. This is of course particularly noticeable when the study exudes such a flawless charm of formal aesthetics as the Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 (see picture on the left).

Only 170 kilograms when fully fueled?
Husqvarna
The trade fair study shone with a sensational design. Most of it was saved in the series, but there are a few inevitable street accessories.
It has nothing to do with the usual KTM edging, is as independent as it is successful in terms of design – and yet it is not allowed on the road. Turn signals, license plate holders and thick mirrors must be on. And unfortunately the really stunningly exposed dragster-style air filter – a real eye-catcher in the study – is hidden behind a rather plain lid. At least that’s what our Erlkonig photos of pre-series machines painted in black show. Nevertheless: Conceptually, the Husqvarna Svartpilen 701 and Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 go their own way.
Alongside the Duke, the Vitpilen sports machine will be the only road machine to be powered by a powerful single-cylinder engine. The 75 hp 690 is the strongest series single of all time. When fully fueled, the Husqvarna Vitpilen 701 with its light tubular space frame should weigh a measly 170 kilograms, so this will be an unrivaled light-footed heater for the country road or even for the racetrack.
Market launch in 2018?
The Husqvarna Svartpilen 701, which is equipped with a higher handlebar, is more likely to move in urban areas. Technically almost identical to the Husqvarna Vitpilen 701, wire-spoke wheels and studded tires are pleasing to the eye. Relaxed promenades with sporty and aesthetic demands and still win every traffic light sprint, that’s how you could define the Husqvarna specifications. But even light off-road use should be possible with the Svartpilen, thanks to the conventionally raised license plate holder.
So you could actually call this version a modern interpretation of the scrambler. With a pretty bold design. Husqvarna will soon find out how popular this is. Because the smaller versions with the 44 hp 390 engine will be launched in the not too distant future, i.e. 2018. Their design language is very similar to the large single cylinders and polarizes to a similar extent. The brand off-road models are now in greater demand than ever, and so one rushes from record year to record year. In Germany, Husqvarna is in the top ten for the first time – and therefore fully on target.
