Moto Guzzi V85 TT

Recalls due to loss of oil and rest

Piaggio has to recall all Moto Guzzi V85 TT machines in the US. Oil can leak at the rear axle differential, and footrests can fall off.

Piaggio is calling the US market M.oto Guzzi V85 TT back. Oil can escape from the rear axle drive of the Enduro and spread over the rim and tire. This can lead to a fall.

For the USA, the American traffic safety authority NHTSA names 371 models from the construction period of production start May 2019 to September 2019 that will be recalled. It is estimated that around four percent of this could be affected by this oil problem. Since the end of September, the drive production in the factory should have been converted.

With reference to Piaggio, the NHTSA names damage to the shaft seal on sharp housing edges during assembly as the reason for the possible oil leakage.

MOTORRAD also had a problem with oil leaking on the rear axle drive on its endurance test machine at a mileage of 10,000. There was a loss of oil on the rear axle drive. Initially only recognizable as fog, it quickly turned into drops that were distributed on the rim and the rear tire. MOTORRAD had received similar messages from readers and found them in Internet forums. Piaggio immediately fitted the MOTORRAD endurance test machine with a new rear axle drive. In response to MOTORRAD’s request for clarification, Piaggio, the owner of the Moto Guzzi brand, named two possible reasons for the oil loss. On the one hand, the dealer could have filled in too much oil (which can be ruled out in the MOTORCYCLE endurance test), on the other hand, a sealing ring could be the cause for unspecified reasons. MOTORRAD wanted to know whether this was the case in the endurance test and, when asked, received an answer that the Simmerring had no externally visible damage, but should be examined in more detail. Moto Guzzi has now completed the analysis of the problem. Apparently a defective oil seal or its incorrect installation was the cause of the oil leak.

Moto Guzzi now wants to write to all owners of affected machines and ask them to go to the workshop. Moto Guzzi is also offering all affected customers a free check-up for their motorcycle.

Footrests vibrate

A second U.S. recall for the Moto Guzzi V85 TT is related to sloping footpegs. Vibrations can cause the E-locking ring to loosen, the retaining bolt to be lost and the footrest to fall out of its holder. The possible loss of detent is indicated by an increased noise level from the detaching detent. As part of this recall, 399 vehicles are being examined in the United States. Piaggio assumes that the problem can occur on around two percent of all machines. Machines from the production period February 2019 to November 2019 are being recalled.
