Aprilia NA 850 Mana ABS test

Automatic motorcycle with ABS

A year ago Aprilia started offering a motorcycle with automatic transmission. Now the Italians are submitting an ABS for the all-rounder.

They still exist, the situations in which you can amaze other motorcyclists even with a very ordinary-looking two-wheeler. The traffic light start with the AT.prilia NA 850 Mana is one of them. Instead of waiting anxiously for the green phase, the Mana driver remains rather bored in front of the signal system, simply accelerates when it is green and drives up and away while others, far behind, are still sorting the gears of their gearbox.

Anyone who has ever been able to test drive the Aprilia will have learned to appreciate the brisk and easy way of getting around. The automatic, which can be selected in three modes, reacts quickly and inconspicuously: sport, touring and rain. As experience with the MOTORRAD endurance tester shows, the touring mode is usually used, in which the speed level of the high-torque V-two-cylinder is far lower than in the sport mode, without the acceleration and torque being significantly affected. Those who like to drive in a sporty way, on the other hand, tend to use the sequential shift option, which the automatic also offers. This works either at the push of a button or with the gear lever.

The 76 hp Mana turns out to be more than just an ideal city vehicle. The dresser seating position and the comfortable chassis setting make it suitable for traveling throughout. However, the concept of offering a comfortable and easy-to-use all-round motorcycle was not properly thought through. For example, the Mana lacks low-maintenance rear-wheel drive, and until recently no ABS was available. This can now be ordered as an option (surcharge compared to the ABS-free version 700 euros). With the already very effective and easily controllable brakes, it is a real bench. Average deceleration values without ABS of up to 10.1 m / s² when the front and rear brakes are used at the same time are record-breaking. With the noticeable but late-acting ABS, the delay is hardly less. The feeling for the pressure point has not changed either, but you can clearly feel the control process through a pulsating hand and foot lever. The ABS-controlled Mana from 100 km / h needs just 40 centimeters more to come to a standstill after 38.6 meters. Whereby only a professional can achieve a braking distance of 38.2 meters with the ABS-free Mana. With ABS, even an inexperienced driver can dare to use extremely high braking values.

That is why the Mana with ABS is absolutely recommendable, but anything but a special offer. A buyer has to shell out 9,935 euros. Comparable competitors such as a Kawasaki ER-6n are more than 3000 euros cheaper, but do not brake as well.
