MotoGP tests on the Kymiring
Over 350 km / h on the straight, otherwise very slow
After the first official MotoGP test on the Kymiring, the drivers were critical of the track layout. Over 350 km / h are reached on the straight.

On the two test days (August 19 and 20, 2019) on the Kymiring, MotoGP participants were able to collect their first data in dry and wet conditions. The track, which is still under construction, should be part of the MotoGP calendar in 2020. For the first time since 1982 a motorcycle grand prix will take place in Finland. After critical comments after the first day of the test, the overall conclusion of the drivers is nevertheless positive. Bradley Smith tested for Aprilia, Michele Pirro for Ducati, Suzuki sent Sylvain Guintoli out onto the track and KTM Mika Kallio. The two Germans Stefan Bradl (Honda) and Jonas Folger (Yamaha) also did a lot of test laps.
Criticism of the track after a wet test day
On the evening after the first day, which was completed completely in the wet, the drivers were critical of the track layout. Several pilots decided that the track was too narrow for MotoGP. “In the infield we are only in first and second gear,” quotes motorsport-magazin.com Yamaha tester Jonas Folger. According to the online magazine, Michele Pirro criticized the route more clearly: “The first part is fast, but the rest too slow.” The water standing on the route was also criticized and the many outwardly sloping corners as a challenge for the drivers, however rated suboptimal for performance.
The second day of testing then began dry at temperatures well over 20 degrees. At around 4 p.m., the teams stopped testing ahead of schedule due to the onset of rain. The conclusion was much more positive. Bradley Smith told the online portal motorsport-total.com: “The track is pretty tight for MotoGP. The first part of the track, the first five corners are really nice, and I really like sector 3. But Sectors 2 and 4 are pretty tight. I like it because it’s different. “The Briton, who lapped the Kymiring the fastest after both days of testing and thus set the first unofficial track record, points out in the same breath:” If we race here with these powerful machines, it is it is a bit tight and difficult to overtake. “
Tests should provide feedback for the completion of the route
Except for the asphalt strip and pit lane, the track is currently still largely under construction. The information and feedback from the drivers should be taken into account when fine-tuning the curbs, for example. Track director Timo Pohjola was quite satisfied with the tests to motorsport-total.com: “These two days have shown us all that we have been successful with our work.”
The top lap times of the tests on the Kymiring:
- Bradley Smith (Aprilia) – 1: 47.540 minutes
- Stefan Bradl (Honda) – 1: 47.864
- Michele Pirro (Ducati) – 1: 48.138
- Sylvain Guintoli (Suzuki) – 1: 48.238
- Mika Kallio (KTM) – 1: 49.141
- Jonas Folger (Yamaha) – 1: 49.286
Conclusion
The route layout will probably remain unchanged despite criticism. However, it is to be expected that the water drainage will be improved again. We are looking forward to the first times of the MotoGP riders.
