WSSP Australia: Mahias 0.001 sec from victory…
Interrupted by a red flag, the first race of the 2017 Supersport season at Phillip Island was contested over ten small but intense laps … Mahias lost with a breath in front of a surprising Rolfo. Cluzel got kicked out by Caricasulo. Hot !
Departure : The poleman PJ Jacobsen started less well than Jules Cluzel, second in qualifying. Our n ° 16 on his Honda plunges into the first curve at the head of the race ahead of his replacement on the MV Agusta. Jacobsen is attacked from the second corner by Kyle Ryde and Alex Baldolini.
Ryde attacks Cluzel in the Honda hairpin. The young Englishman came out first ahead of Cluzel and Baldolini. Our second representative, Lucas Mahias, took advantage of the first “knock” pass in front of the pits to jump from sixth to third place! His teammate Caricasulo hoists his factory R6 to fifth position.
PJ Jacobsen falls at the start of the 2nd round! Kenan Sofuoglu not taking part in this first event – he forfeited the second as well – Jules Cluzel has the opportunity to gain the upper hand over his two best enemies … Lucas Mahias him, gives up third place to Ryde.
Before the end of the 2nd lap, the leader Baldolini is forced to give up and gives the reins of the race to Cluzel! Our "Coq Supersportif" is overwhelmed by Mahias and Ryde at the start of the 3rd loop … and the red flag is suddenly waved by the marshals: motorcycle debris is on the track !
Former Moto2 rider Robin Mulhauser has just been the victim of a nasty highside at the exit of Siberia … Jules Cluzel’s teammate has the chance to reach the edge of the track on his legs. Left the track to avoid the crazy Honda n ° 70 – in vain – Gino Rea is also out of the race.
Second start: The drivers resume their place on the original starting grid for a race of only 10 laps. Jacobsen, who had started again immediately after his crash, sets off again from pole in front of Cluzel, Caricasulo, Ryde, Mahias and Baldolini, also in the game despite his slip into the 10th corner a few minutes before.
Cluzel’s Honda rears up when the red lights go out but "Julo" still manages to get ahead of Caricasulo, Mahias, Jacobsen, Baldolini, Ryde, Smith, Tuuli, Morais and West,. Caricasulo turns inside Cluzel in the Stoner breakout and completes the first lap in the lead.
Mahias attempted an attack on the exit while descending from Lukey Heights but stayed behind Cluzel. In the penultimate curve, PJ Jacobsen almost got into orbit by his F3. He loses two places, but not control of his machine nor his chances of podium or victory…
Cluzel took control of the race on the 2nd lap, leaving Mahias and Caricasulo to explain themselves … Baldolini and his MV Agusta took advantage of the fight between the two Yamaha factory riders to hoist his MV Agusta in second position. Lucas, however, recovers second place under braking from Honda Corner, Federico third on exit.
Just behind, Jacobsen came off the track in the 10th cup-shaped bend. Ryde almost got carried away by the American but remains on the tarmac and starts the attack again on his Ninja. PJ and his official F3 are in 16th position with seven laps to go.
Two groups of four drivers form at the start of the 5th lap: Cluzel, Baldolini, Mahias and Caricasulo fight for first place while Rolfo, Ryde, Tuuli and West fight for fifth. But in the middle of Honda Corner, Caricasulo momentarily loses the front, miraculously straightens up with a nudge and allows the second group to get closer. !
Jacobsen signs the fastest lap in the race but enters the points by signing. Cluzel him, supports the pressure maintained by Baldolini and his MV Agusta n ° 25. Mahias is in the wheel of the Italian … but is passed by his teammate at the start of the eighth lap !
Another transalpine, Roberto Rolfo, climbs in the leading group, placing his MV Agusta in the suction of the two factory Yamaha. Overwhelmed by his rivals, Cluzel makes a small mistake in braking the n ° 10 pit and fails to take out the unlucky Ryde.
Caricasulo and Mahias passed Baldolini at the start of the penultimate lap. Rolfo joined them on the podium braking turn 10 … Stuck in the pack, Cluzel tried to get back into the Top 5 – then completed by West – on the first braking of the last lap but could not keep his fourth place by tumbling down in Southern Loop.
At the same time, Rolfo realizes a masterful exterior on Mahias and Caricasulo! The MV Agusta n ° 44 comes out ahead of the Yamaha n ° 144 and 64, the Honda n ° 16 of Cluzel, the MV Agusta n ° 25 of Baldolini, the Yamaha n ° 13 of West, the Kawasaki n ° 77 of Ryde and the Yamaha n ° 66 by Tuuli…
Roby and Lucas make a magnificent last lap, moving away slightly from their pursuers. Fighting for third place, Caricasulo and Cluzel crash into turn 10: the front wheel of the R6 crashes into the rear wheel of the CBR n ° 16 which suddenly gets up and catapults poor Julo.
In front, Mahias lodges in Rolfo’s aspiration and climbs back to his level in the home stretch! The two pilots literally play elbows until the checkered flag … and beyond: crushed by Lucas, Roberto momentarily leaves the track.
Displayed in first place on the control screens, the name of Mahias moves back one place during the lap of honor: Rolfo is declared the winner, for a thousandth of a second! Falling violently on the buttocks, Cluzel painfully exits the circuit without scoring a point while the podium was well within his reach.
It was finally the guest driver Anthony West who reached the third step of this first podium of the season. The seeds of Supersport champion Ryde and Tuuli end up in the wheel of the "old" Australian. PJ Jacobsen saves an unexpected sixth place, Baldolini a thirteenth.
