All Tests - 2013 MV Agusta F4 Test: the prestige of the senses - Rage in the heart

With its F4, MV Agusta has so far offered one of the most beautiful sports motorcycles on the market. In 2013, the Italian manufacturer tries to combine beauty and efficiency: the Varese Super (be) bike gains in both performance and sophistication…. Test.

Rage in the heart

If contemplating the MV Agusta F4 in the boxes of a circuit – in this case that of Valencia, in Spain – already provokes a certain stir, discovering the symphony interpreted by its engine when it comes time to press the starter almost plunges into a second state…

Improved by small touches in 2013, mainly in terms of reliability and use of power (read the "Engine" section of our Technical Update), the 998 cc four-cylinder has lost none of its acoustic panache. . Its hoarse sound resonates as if it escaped from a just approved silencer, like some Japanese "4-legged" from the early 2000s..

This manly soundtrack immediately sets the tone: the F4 is not just a passive beauty to store behind a window in order to admire these finery! A slight burst of gas and the tachometer graduations darken at an astonishing speed on the instrumentation (see the list of information in our datasheet), as if this block compressed to 13.4: 1 were devoid of inertia.

This feeling of dealing with a racing motorbike engine is confirmed as soon as you come out of the pit lane: a frank rotation of the electronic accelerator of the "basic" F4 with which we begin this test sends its delightful facies into the tunes on the first two gears !

Ideally installed to strike a pendulum, the pilot has a front row seat to take advantage of this promising excess of zeal: the bust is sufficiently tilted on the tiny – and inefficient – bubble to see the front wheel simply by looking down !

Sporty type, the position induced by the triangle "saddle / footrest / handlebars" does not encourage a leisurely ride, but rather arousal. At the same time, we suspected it a bit! Thinner and above all more compact than the previous generation designed by Tamburini, the 2013 MV Agusta F4 enjoys remarkable finesse at the crotch level and tends to a fairly wide handlebar..

The only downside: body movements are slightly penalized by the slippery coating of the saddle and the relative width of the 17-liter tank on its front part. Nothing insurmountable however, since it only took us a few laps to completely obscure this observation..

Present from low revs, the engine manufactured by Meccanica Verghera Agusta allows very consistent revivals despite its "super-square" dimensions (79 mm bore x 50.9 mm stroke). Some tingling is also part of its characteristics, without being really annoying … on the track.

The torque of 110.8 Nm (111 Nm on the F4RR) allows the engine speed to drop to around 5000 rpm inside a curve without fear of remaining "stuck" at output, even on gears. intermediaries. All you have to do is tighten up and the mechanics get carried away in a growl, the intensity of which increases with the exhilarating rise in speed..

The bike then rushes forward with athletic vigor up to 10,000 rpm. There, the engine goes into "hyperspace" mode up to the switch located at 13,400 rpm on the F4 and F4R (14,000 on the F4 RR). It is only if the contours of the track do not become blurry! As an indication, at 190 km / h in third gear, the front of the "standard" F4 still lifts under the effect of this demonic acceleration !

MNC can confirm it: none of the 195 hp (200.8 hp on the RR!) Is missing and they are true thoroughbreds trained for pure performance! Fortunately, the cycle part is in tune with this fire mechanic. Extremely rigid, the chassis absorbs all the stresses without flinching, while the "Marzocchi-Sachs" combination of the standard F4 does a remarkable job..

Advertised for 191 kg dry, the Hypersport de Varese is placed in a curve very naturally, thanks to a front axle as precise as it is stable. However, it requires more engagement than the very lively CBR1000RR, for example, but offers in return an exquisite "track feel" and a full-angle serenity that the Honda cannot boast..

Even by keeping a little pressure on the right lever, the F4 joins the rope without collisions or inclinations to widen the trajectory defined by the pilot. And yet, it’s an understatement to say that it brakes hard, this MV Agusta !

Very powerful and enduring, the radial fixing device is perfectly cut for the exercise, even if a certain lack of feeling at the start of the race can be blamed. Likewise, the rear brake does not provide the response needed to easily correct a trajectory..
