Hypermotard 2013 test: the Italian renaissance

All Tests - Hypermotard 2013 test: the Italian renaissance - Full of technology ... and gasoline!

Ducati is offering a brand new Hypermotard in 2013. Liquid-cooled 821 cc engine, new chassis, advanced electronics and better ergonomics: the Bologna Supermot ‘has it all, including the rain that invited itself at its launch !

Full of technology … and gasoline !

As very often with Ducati, the presence of the large water mill! – does not in any way weigh down the general appearance of the motorcycle, nor its effective mass: 175 kg dry, or less than 200 kg all full (198 kg exactly, read our complete Technical Sheet on the last page of this test ).

"Admittedly, it is 3 kg more than the old model"(172 kg dry for the Hypermotard 1100 Evo, Editor’s note), analyzes Federico Sabbioni, responsible for the Hypermotard project,"but we must take into account the arrival of liquid cooling, its radiator, its pumps and hoses, as well as that of the Safety Pack".

Bosch ABS (latest 9MP model) and Ducati traction control (DTC!) Are indeed part of the original equipment of the 2013 Hypermotard. Both can be disconnected and respectively configurable on 3 and 8 levels, these elements are completed. by a Magnetti Marelli electronic injection and a "ride-by-wire" accelerator allowing to vary the moods of the engine.

This is how three engines are hidden behind the "eight twenty-one": a version "High"which develops 110 horsepower and responds promptly to requests from the right wrist, a"Medium"110 hp also but more polished, and a" Low "limited to 75 hp.

According to the clever calculations of the Site Statistics department, the Hypermotard therefore offers 108 adjustment possibilities … And all this without counting the adjustments – mechanical and not electronic – of the preload and rebound of the Sachs rear shock absorber !

The modification of each electronic assistance requires being at a complete stop and requires a certain intellectual gymnastics – as well as an alert left thumb – to correctly operate the control gear and navigate in the menus and submenus.

Fortunately, the new Hypermotard incorporates three "driving modes"which automatically set the ABS, DTC and engine mapping (see table below). Their selection, still using the left stalk, can this time be done while driving.

Two small rules just have to be observed in order to validate the choice between "Sport", "Touring" and "Urban": hold down the validation button – the same as for stopping the indicators – and cut the throttle entirely. Nothing really rocket science !

All the data concerning these modes and their own settings appear continuously on the compact – therefore light! – LCD dashboard, alongside more traditional information (read our Technical sheet). We note in this regard that only the fuel gauge is missing and, at the same time, the remaining autonomy.

Anyway, the reserve light will come on later on the new Hypermotard: in addition to the average consumption of the new, more moderate unit – but Ducati does not give precise figures – the fuel tank capacity affects a remarkable jump from 12.4 to 16 liters !

Once again, the Italian engineers have perfectly succeeded in camouflaging this increase in volume: the Hypermotard remains as slender as ever, its new tubular steel frame always enclosing its engine as closely as possible..

The rear part of the bike is just as slender. The two aluminum plates connected to each other by a polymer shell – assembly already found on the Multistrada – are in perfect balance with the tank, its trim and the high front fender, which is also inspired by the road 1200.

Finally, the new silencer in the low position – it was high on previous models – greatly contributes to this impression of lightness. "We have used the very latest advances in terms of material to minimize the volume of our pot", assures us Federico Sabbioni.

The whole bike is superbly finished: welds of the trellis, cleanliness of the aluminum parts – die-cast aluminum for the footrest plates and forged aluminum for the foot controls -, arrangement of the cables, adjustment of the plastics, purity one-piece Brembo calipers … nothing is left to chance !

Even more than the old Hypermotard and its more massive look that could intimidate, the new 2013 model takes on the air of a big toy, especially in its dapper Ducati red color. And it may be cool and ugly outside, MNC has only one desire: to go play with it !
