BMW C 650 GT test: the good surprise !
The new BMW C 650 GT scooter, a little eclipsed from the front of the maxiscooters scene by its sporty brother C 600 Sport, has a lot to offer: hardly less sporty but more comfortable, the BMW C 650 GT is even worth a visit. ! Test.
The Bavarian Pullman
While escaping from Madrid (Spain) by the motorway, the 650 GT reveals the excellence of its protection: with the windshield not fully raised, the pilot is perfectly protected, both at the top and the bottom of the body.
As on the C 600 Sport, the damping performs remarkably well. The fork and the mono-shock absorber easily absorb bumps and mass transfers thanks to their excellent compromise "efficiency-comfort". A characteristic that translates into that small hint of firmness typical of BMW two-wheeler production.
Less creamy than on the more comfortable GT scooters, the suspensions of the C 650 GT, on the other hand, work with much more precision. to the benefits of road holding, even at high speed.
On the fast track, the comfort of the saddle and the absence of turbulence are fully savored. The serenity felt on the handlebars quickly gives rise to the desire for (very) long trips, as with a big GT! With this in mind, we would almost come to criticize the absence of a cruise control and a sound system in the catalog of options. In series on the other hand, a few liters more in the tank of 16 liters (as on the Sport) would undoubtedly not have been superfluous …
Barely less efficient than the C 600 Sport when attacking on small roads, the C 650 GT offers much greater driving pleasure. The ground clearance is good and the front axle particularly reassuring. Braking can get out of all situations – even if the ABS is triggered a little quickly at the rear. That said, the poor grip of the roads taken during this test may not be unrelated. !
On exiting curves, the pick-ups are a little softer than on the Sport. But without being extraordinary, the performance of the twin is largely sufficient to travel loaded, alone or in pairs … and to lose a few license points !
In the end, the character of the BMW inline-twin seems to stick better to "fast GT-ascending" use than to purely sporty driving: a point that benefits the C 650 GT, where the C 600 Sport may seem too much. "well behaved" in front of a Tmax…
Verdict: the smart choice !
The chemistry between the engine of the C 650 GT, its driving position and its high-end equipment is judicious: in this, the C 650 GT is reminiscent of the best road motorcycles of the Munich manufacturer..
Well born and statutory, it is also perfectly balanced, which helps to quickly overcome its substantial weight. Unlike its high price (€ 11,450 basic rate) which is much less easily forgotten! Under these conditions, it will shade a Burgman 650 (10 499 € in Executive version) will not be surprising in the eyes of some …
On the other hand, where the C 650 GT is doing very well, it is by positioning itself as a tempting alternative to certain much more expensive road bikes. Some bikers may well be tempted by its excellent protection, its practical tips (automatic handbrake, etc.) and its healthy cycle part in all circumstances. !
Still, we will have to wait a little longer before opposing it to its direct opponents, since this C 650 GT will arrive a little later than the C 600 Sport: at the beginning of June 2012. To be continued on Site: stay tuned !
