It’s hard to know who the French bikers are: from the bad boy of the 50s to the quadra in a 21st century suit, a lot of oil has flowed under the bridges… An in-depth TNS Sofres survey for GEMA Prevention provides a clearer picture.

Portrait of two-wheeler drivers in 2009

639 drivers of motorized two-wheelers 50cc and over

This TNS Sofres study was conducted online from May 7 to 18, 2009 with 630 drivers of motorized two-wheelers 50cc and over, aged 15 and over.

This study carried out by TNS Sofres with a sample of 639 two-wheeler drivers representative of French society aimed to "have framing data on the fleet of motorized two-wheelers, obtain an innovative and relevant breakdown of two-wheel drivers according to their uses and their relationship to two-wheelers"and to"deliver information on each of the profiles identified on driving behavior, risk perception, expectations in terms of prevention and road safety".

Strong majority of motorcycles despite the breakthrough of the scooter

GEMA Prevention

The GEMA Prevention association was created by mutual insurers who are members of the Groupement des entreprises mutuelles d’Assurances (GEMA), a professional union that represents the following groups and mutuals that collectively insure more than one in two cars and private homes. two million motorized two-wheelers: AGPM Assurances Group, Altima Assurances, AMDM, AMF Mutuelle, Assurances Banque Populaire IARD, Ethias Droit commun, GCE Assurances IARD, GMF group, IMA group, Maaf group, Macif group, MAE group, group Maif, MAPA-Mutuelle d’Assurance, Matmut group, MFA, Monceau Assurances group, MISPM, Natixis Assurances, Smacl Assurances, le Sou medical and USU.

The proportion of women on the handlebars increases slightly on all motorized two-wheelers (27% against 25% five years ago), but they remain in the minority in scooters (39%) and very largely under-represented in motorcycles (19 %).

All categories and all sexes combined, the average age of the driver of two-wheelers in 2009 was 37.7 years but bikers are on average older (39.3 years) than scooter riders (35.3 years).

Contrary to popular belief about small-displacement vehicles, the average age of the driver of a 50-80cc two-wheeler is 30 and 41 on over 80cc. The "little ones" are therefore not the prerogative of hats, even if the study does not specify the average age of drivers under 50 cc..

The average age of riders of two-wheelers from 50 to less than 125 cc is 31 years old, that of 125 riders 43 years old (!) And that of riders over 125 40 years old.

Another interesting indication: the fleet of motorized two-wheelers in France today presents "a balanced profile in terms of displacement"with still a strong majority of motorcycles (60%) despite the strong breakthrough of scooters (40%).

It should also be noted that the small displacement is largely the majority: 34% of less than 125 and 29% of 125, that is to say in total 63% against only 37% of more than 125. Finally, among the segment of 50-80cc, there are 75 % of scooters while the more than 80cc have 75% of motorcycles.

2500 euros per month

Regarding the dough on household income, our advertising friends will be delighted to learn that the majority of two-wheeled drivers receive between 2000 and 2999 euros per month (23%). Some are a little more ric-rac at the end of the month (13% earn between 1500 and 1999 euros, 11% between 1000 and 1499 euros and 7% less than 1000 euros), but others are much more comfortable: 17% say they earn from 3000 to 3999 euros per month, 8% from 4000 to 4999, 5% from 5000 to 5999 and 6% have fun with more than 6000 euros per month. Without forgetting 11% of drivers detached from low material realities (Tibetan monks in CG125, traders in Vmax or scholastic sisters in hybrid MP3?) Who do not know how much they earn…

In the category who cares a little, the most curious will note all the same that 49% of French bikers and scooterists do not have children under 18 at home, which leaves them time to hang out quiet in the evening at the aperitif grease the chain and redo the levels. 34% of two-wheeler riders have no children at home (regardless of age), 23% have one, 28% have two and 14% have three or more.

Finally, since no information has filtered out on the proportion of leopard panties and panther thongs among bikers or on the wearing of flowery underpants among scooterists, the most inquisitive will have to be content with knowing that most (29%) of households of two-wheeler riders are made up of two people, 7% of one person, 22% of three people, 28% of four people and 15% of five people and more.

In summary, motorized two-wheeler drivers are mainly men but have a significant proportion of women (27%), they are rather experienced (11 years of driving on average even if one in four drivers is less than two years old). experience) and relatively assiduous (one in two uses their two-wheeler at least three times a week, whether for leisure (79%) but also for commuting (63%). Unsurprisingly, the use leisure is predominant among motorcyclists while the two-wheeled metro work sleep is especially the prerogative of scooterists.
