Business - End of 100 horses, electric motorcycle ... The CSIAM facing the big files 2015 - The 50 cc turn in a vicious circle

The International Chamber of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles took stock of the 2014 French market for motorized 2 and 3 wheels. Among the other topics discussed, MNC retains four: equipment, 50 cc, electric … and 100 horses !

The 50 cc turns in a vicious circle

No new model – even badged Yamaha or MBK? – does not seem able to relaunch the 50 cc sector … There is great concern within the profession, because the kids who drive today’s mopeds, scooters or cyclos will be tomorrow’s bikers !

"Registrations of mopeds fell by -7.3% with 98,384 registrations. The recovery is not yet effective, but the decline is slowing down … compared with the -17% in 2013", tries to make the CSIAM positive.

"We can also note that this negative trend is shared by the majority of European countries, which in their great majority continue to record double-digit declines.". But this observation will not console French professionals any more … In this specific case, the misfortune of some does not make the happiness of others.

However, the situation in which our moped market is plunged is particularly vicious: according to the president of the CSIAM, "there are no strong signs of relaunching the sector … Lack of new products and innovations, but also lack of large volumes". The story of the snake that dies its tail, in short…

As well felt as they are, the advertising campaigns (of MBK in particular, with its excellent "freedom package from € 39.95 per month: no calls, no SMS, no data, but unlimited mobility"!) will not be enough to put our dear children back in the saddle.

The 50 cc must therefore be more attractive. Easy to say … Engineers and marketers of large and small, see the success of the Mash 125 in France for example! – have every interest in racking their brains. Their – our! – future depends on it.

What device could seduce young people, divert them – from time to time – from video games and convert them to motorcycles? The French Motorcycling Federation (FFM) is also thinking about it intensely and has its little idea, to say the least unexpected: the VAE, or electric bike….
