Motorcycle factories in Europe: Yamaha, KTM and Ducati on hiatus, MV Agusta resists…
We are in 2020 after Jesus Christ. All European motorcycle and scooter factories (Yamaha-MBK, KTM-Husqvarna, Ducati) are closing in turn due to the coronavirus… All? No ! A small factory of diehard Italians still resists the invader: MV Agusta !
French motorcycle and scooter makers had foreseen it: the coronavirus got the better of their factories based in Europe. At Yamaha first of all, the decision was taken to stop production at Motori Minarelli, its engine plant in Calderara di Reno (Italy) and at MBK Industrie, its final assembly plant in Saint-Quentin (France)..
"The health of our employees and our social responsibility are our priorities, which is why we have decided to suspend our production in these two factories in the face of the spread of the coronavirus pandemic", explains Eric de Seynes, CEO of Yamaha Motor Europe.

"We place the greatest value on the know-how and commitment of our employees who have demonstrated their loyalty to Yamaha and who face an unprecedented external situation. For their peace of mind we put every effort to ensure that no employee is financially penalized until the return to normal activities in Italy and France ", assures the big French boss.
The factories of the Yamaha group are closed until next Sunday (March 22), but this forced break could well continue: "the situation will be reviewed every week", informs the Japanese brand which will follow the evolution of the pandemic.
At KTM, while the Mattighofen plant currently continues to operate, an early shutdown is scheduled from March 30 to April 10 in order to avoid any disruption in the supply chain from northern Italy.
"Many suppliers are located in this region severely affected by the coronavirus. Thanks to this measure, KTM avoids a possible uncontrolled interruption of its activities and anticipates part of the company’s holidays in the summer at this Easter period to stabilize the chain long-term supply ", calculates the Pierer group.
The Austrians specify that "the distribution of motorcycles (KTM, Husqvarna and Gas Gas, Editor’s note) and the supply of spare parts are not affected by these measures". In France, however, the managers of the three brands yesterday invited their customers to be careful and cautious..
"For motorized two-wheelers, the sales and after-sales service activity remains open to the public, in accordance with the rules of distance in interpersonal relationships and other so-called barrier measures, in particular hygiene, prescribed at the national level, confirmed they … a few hours before the announcement of confinement for 15 renewable days.
"We advise customers (who absolutely need their motorbike, editor’s note!) To check with the distributor about the measures taken (making an appointment, etc.) before going to the store, by all available means : phone, website, social networks ".
On the front line in the face of the coronavirus, Ducati adopted protective measures at its Borgo Panigale plant on February 24: "temperature measurement of each person entering the plant, travel limited to what is strictly necessary, strong impetus for teleworking, meetings with reduction of participants and the distance between them, canteen with special procedures and revision of schedules to reduce close contact between people ".
Stops in the chain … except at MV Agusta !
Despite this, the Bologna firm was forced to stop its production "from Friday March 13 to Wednesday March 18 inclusive, in order to implement a series of works and actions on the production lines, to further increase the level of worker safety and to introduce a team work program to halve the number of people on the assembly line at the same time ".
However, the closure of the plant has just been extended until March 25, 2020, in order to "ensure full compliance with the new guidelines (shared protocol published on March 14), which will require a few days of work and modifications. additional structures ". White-collar workers continue to work but from home…
"I am proud of the way Ducati employees are facing this difficult time for our country," said Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding. "My thanks go to all those who, on a daily basis and even in a difficult situation like this one, confirm the great value of a united workforce, united but also sensitive and attentive".
"For them and for their safety, measures and choices like the ones we are making are necessary and due", adds the big Italian boss. "However, all support services to our customers are guaranteed, first and foremost the supply of spare parts. We want to reassure Ducatisti and our dealers all over the world: we are organizing ourselves to be ready for restart and, even in this period unavailability, we will not fail to accompany you ".
Finally, still in Italy, MV Agusta and his staff representatives have chosen to keep their Schiranna factory open to a reduced number of workers, "in strict accordance with the urgent provisions contained in the Prime Minister’s decree of 11/03 and directives issued by Confindustria Lombardia ".
"We believe that it is our duty not to give up in the face of this crisis situation, so that the economy of this community can recover once the emergency has passed", legitimizes Timur Sardarov, CEO of MV Agusta.
"We made this decision with a great sense of responsibility, towards our employees in the first place, but also towards our local community which cannot afford to stop the production unit, and towards all the related industries on which so many workers depend. and their families ", observes the Russian boss.
Departments that are not considered essential to the proper functioning of the MV Agusta factory were however closed, part of the staff had to take (paid) leave, another should be able to take advantage of the CIG (Cassa Integrazione Guadagni) sort of Italian partial unemployment.
"For employees who will continue to come to work, the company has introduced a number of measures to prevent and contain the spread of the Covid-19 epidemic, such as the provision of face masks, gloves, sanitizing gel and detergents for cleaning spaces and work surfaces, in addition to limiting access to common areas ", points out MV Agusta. They are not crazy these Italians…
