European GP - European GP FP1 tests: Miller first in the wet, Quartararo last -

Australian Jack Miller – still formidable on wet asphalt – wins the best time of the first free practice session of the European Grand Prix in Valencia (Spain) on his Ducati-Pramac. Fabio Quartararo for his part fails at the other end of the standings ….

Gray and rain have been part of the game since the arrival of the Grand Prix drivers in Valence, where the antepenultimate race of the season takes place on the occasion of the unprecedented European GP. This race will be followed in the wake of the Valencia GP on the same circuit, before the final scheduled in Portimao (Portugal) on November 22.

The Spanish track – short, tortuous and narrow – is not easy to grasp in these conditions for lack of grip: the numerous crashes in Moto3 just before the MotoGP session testify to this, when the temperature of the asphalt reaches a small chilly 16 ° C. !

Jack Miller – a true artist of piloting in the wet – quickly stood out on his Ducati, safely setting his bike adrift to get the best time in 1’42.063 on his 8th lap. The Australian will no longer be worried after this round: his closest rivals are relegated to half a second !

Franco Morbidelli – on his positive momentum from his victory in Aragon – sets the second fastest time on his Yamaha, which records a severe disappointment with the award of a sanction for fraudulent use of at the very beginning of the season.

The Italian-Brazilian is followed by Stefan Bradl, who successfully continues his interim of defending champion Marc Marquez. Johann Zarco is inserted between the German and Alex Marquez, victim of a fall which made him lose a lot of time in the last ten minutes. The n ° 73 however did everything to restart his Honda, to the point of insulting the marshals so that they help him push his motorcycle. !

Viñales saves its engines

Danilo Petrucci, Pol Espargaro, Miguel Oliveira, Andrea Dovizioso and Maverick Viñales complete the Top 10. As in Aragon, the Yamaha official has driven very little in order to spare his last few engines. The n ° 12 is indeed at the limit since its engine allowance had been cut in the first race: one of its five engines had been returned to Japan for examinations because of suspicious noises..

Viñales has since been forced to run "economically" with its four engines, as have Rossi and Morbidelli who suffered a mechanical breakdown in Jerez (Spain). Only Fabio Quartararo is – for now? – spared by this wave of engine glitches at Yamaha.

But this situation does not particularly smile on the young man from Nice, who finished last (!) Of these FP1 tests, 2.728 seconds behind the best time! The current second in the championship – behind Mir – was once again uncomfortable in the wet, also expressing his dissatisfaction with the break-gu..e character of turn 2 where he almost fell.

Others were also surprised in this tight left curve with precarious grip: Franco Bagnaia went to the mat at the start of the session on his Ducati, while Joan Mir passed near the correctional on his Suzuki! The championship leader will leave the track again at the end of the session in turn 8, again without falling.

This free practice session also sees the debut of Garret Gerloff in the premier class on the Yamaha of Valentino Rossi, who is awaiting the results of his to know whether or not he will be able to resume the track. At this stage, the return of n ° 46 is scheduled for FP3 on Saturday morning unless its results arrive early enough to run this afternoon….

We also salute the 18th place of the courageous Cal Crutchlow, to whom a new injury was discovered after the last race in Aragon: the British driver – decidedly unvarnished – suffers from a ligament tear in his shoulder. "I heard a cracking", he said after the race: you surprise me !

Finally, note the package this weekend of Iker Lecuona: the beginner of the KTM-Tech3 team tested positive for Covid-19 this week and must therefore remain in isolation.
