2019 MotoGP Americas GP report and results (winner Rins)

Alex Rins won his first MotoGP victory at 23 on the Circuit Of The Americas (COTA), where the "king" Marc Marquez literally fell from his throne. The Barcelona driver went for his first success at the 2019 Americas GP against Valentino Rossi, who gave everything – in vain – on his Yamaha to counter the Suzuki ! Summary and rankings.

What an outcome! While the 2019 GP of the Americas seemed to follow the same dynamics as the six previous editions, nothing went as planned … At first, everything was nevertheless the same: Marc Marquez, ultra-favorite from pole position, immediately escaped.

The defending champion, unbeaten in Texas since his registration in the calendar in 2013, widened more than 3.5 seconds before the halfway: at this stage, everything suggested that Marquez would easily pocket his seventh rank victory on the Circuit Of The Americas (COTA). Like a "remake" of the Argentinian Grand Prix, two weeks before.

But in the ninth round, a dramatic turn of events: the invincible Marc Marquez is defeated by his own ardor! The Spaniard fell forward in turn 12 and could not restart, despite his best efforts to relaunch his RC213V with the stroller. The only consolation, the n ° 93 does not seem to have damaged his operated shoulder this winter.

His teammate Jorge Lorenzo threw in the towel just after, victim of a technical problem: the second this weekend after his chain jump in QP2 qualifying! "There is a problem at this level, Honda must solve it", plague Lorenzo, recalling that Marquez suffered the same mishap during the tests in Argentina.

Rossi taps his first win since June 2017 !

Marquez on the mat, the royal road opens for Valentino Rossi: the Italian, brilliantly qualified in 2nd place and determined to try to follow Marquez, regains control of the race when he had probably lost all illusions of go and impose.

The fastest 40-year-old in the world will only complete a few laps in the lead before being joined, then overtaken by Alex Rins. The Suzuki rider, author of a spectacular comeback from 7th place on the grid, overtakes n ° 46 thanks to his obvious superiority at the entry of a curve.

But the Doctor fights like hell during the last two rounds, during which he manages to come back in contact with the GSX-RR on several occasions despite a few small faults caused by his desperate desire to attack Rins, 17 years his junior. !

Nothing will do, however: Rins crosses the finish line of a MotoGP race for the first time as a winner, a few weeks after making an impression during the opening race in Qatar. This first success of n ° 42 seems to call others, as much by the talent of the pilot as by the progression of his bike..

"Alex was stronger"

"I gave everything, but it was not enough to overtake: I made two mistakes and Alex was stronger," he admits sportingly, despite everything happy with this second place in a row. "It’s a shame because it’s been a long time since I won (since the 2017 Dutch GP). But it will be for another time: the most important thing is that I feel in great shape and that the bike has progressed ".

Alex Rins becomes the first rider to win a Suzuki in category since Maverick Viñales in Great Britain in 2016. His joy at the finish was contagious, especially as the young Iberian could not believe having won his first race in front of "maestro Rossi" !

"I’m so happy, the bike is very good, the feeling is excellent. And then, look at this: I am winning in front of Valentino Rossi", enthuses Alex Rins, while his teammate had a much more complicated round….

Viñales penalized: the cracks vote on the extended lap

Newbie Joan Mir was unfortunately rewarded with a passage through the pit lane for having moved slightly before the lights went out, a mishap which also affected Maverick Viñales. "It is the rule, it is severe but necessary", Rossi repeats, when asked about this aspect. Same story for Alex Rins ("You are not allowed to move, and that’s it"), and for Jack Miller.

Bad luck for Viñales, author of a new start to the race without relief: the n ° 12 misinterpreted his sanction and engaged in the "extended lap" (Long lap penalty) instead of executing his ride throught. .. Did the Spaniard think he was doing the right thing, performing this "long tour" that many consider better suited for a flying start? ?

"It’s true that the ‘Long Lap’ is an alternative to consider," agrees Rossi, before pointing an obstacle. "But it seems difficult to put it in place this year, because we would change the rules during the game: for example, it would not be fair for Cal (penalized for a passage in the pit lane in Argentina, Editor’s note)" , he develops. “Maybe next year?” Approve Rins and Miller.

Maverick Viñales finally finished 11th after a comeback with a bit of a bite: not so bad considering the time lost. But what a complicated start to the season: "Mack" has already been trained to the mat by Morbidelli in Argentina !

The podium of this Grand Prix of the Americas is completed by Jack Miller, who signs his best position on Ducati. The Pramac driver, more than 8 seconds behind by Rins and Rossi, finished ahead of Andrea Dovizioso who managed to limit the damage during this visibly complicated weekend for him.

Dovi limits the breakage, Quartararo 7th

"Dovi", fourth, is followed in the standings by Franco Morbidelli, Danilo Petrucci and Fabio Quartararo, who leaves the United States with the points for 7th place. The French debutant is ahead of Pol Espargaro, eighth on arrival after giving KTM their best result in MotoGP qualifying (5th).

The Spanish rider is once again the first Katoche rider in the race, quite far ahead of his teammates: Johann Zarco is 13th at 42.458 sec from the winner ahead of Miguel Oliveira, while Hafizh Syarhin finishes in last place more than a minute away..

Not sure that the Malaysian rider keeps his handlebars at KTM-Tech3 at this speed: "The Fish" obviously has all the trouble in the world to switch from the M1 to the RC16, and sometimes seems completely disoriented on his handlebars. To the point of having already had the right to some rather dry "cropping" from his manager, Herve Poncharal…

MotoGP Championship point (s)

Surprise in the provisional: Andrea Dovizioso recovers the lead of the MotoGP classification, one race only after having ceded it to Marc Marquez! The Italian probably did not expect such a party, he who finished at the foot of the Texan podium 9.420 sec from the winner !

"DesmoDovi" is three lengths ahead of Valentino Rossi (54 Vs 51 pts) and five over Alex Rins (49), who achieves a big blow in the championship with his superb victory in Austin. The big loser of the day is Marc Marquez, who dropped from first to fourth place nine points behind the leader following his fall…

Danilo Petrucci finished the provisional Top 5 ahead of Jack Miller and Takaaki Nakagami, while Cal Crutchlow fell to 8th position: the Briton fell looking for an opening on Rossi in the first part of the race, and that cost him dearly in an accounting plan after his stolen departure in Argentina.

On the French side, Fabio Quartararo occupies a pleasing 10th position ahead of his more experienced teammate Franco Morbidelli on his Yamaha SRT-Petronas. Johann Zarco only appears in 19th place, aware that the road will still be long before returning to success at KTM…
