Positive month of February for the motorcycle and scooter market … 125 !

Market reports - Positive month of February for the motorcycle and scooter market ... 125! - Positive month of February for the market

It is not just the car market which is on the rise in France: in February, sales of 125 cc jumped by + 27.6%! Those of large cubes increased by + 5.2%, but February 29 was enough to erase this increase… Explanations, figures and analysis.

Positive month of February for the market

In absolute terms, the month of February 2016 was positive for the French motorcycle market: 9,552 motorcycles and scooters of "more than 50 cc" were registered, which corresponds to an increase of + 10.6% compared to last year (read our). But as always, the results are not that simple !

As 2016 was a leap year, dealers could have taken advantage of one more day to bait and hook the customer. Unfortunately for them, February 29 fell on a Monday and the concessions remained closed (20 opening days in February 2015, as in February 2016).

The prefectures, they opened their doors an additional day (21 working days against 20, or + 5%!), Thus allowing to inflate the statistics of the motorcycle market in France … like that of the automobile "up + 13% in raw data and + 7.6% on a comparable number of working days", calculates the CCFA.

Approached from this purely statistical angle, the + 5.2% increase in large-engine registrations can therefore be purely and simply canceled. However, the impressive increases of some manufacturers cannot be erased..

BMW in particular grew by + 25%, which enabled it to win the second round of 2016 against a breathless Yamaha (-29%). Honda jumped + 41% and finished a few lengths behind a stable Kawasaki. Harley-Davidson and Ducati also show clear progress (+ 31% and + 17%).

As for the 125, all the witnesses are green … All except one: that of Mash which indicates a decrease of -35% of its sales. We can also see that only two brands see their market share increase: the leader Honda and the outsider KTM.

The other main players nevertheless increase their scores compared to February 2015, more (Piaggio, MBK and Sym) or less (Yamaha, Peugeot, Suzuki and Kymco). Overall, therefore, the 125 market is doing very well: + 27.6%, significantly more than the + 5% mechanically granted by the additional working day..

The performance of the 125 – and the big cubes – is all the more "positive" as the climatic conditions endured last month were not particularly favorable to the use – and to the purchase – of motorized two-wheelers..

Certainly, "February 2016 was marked by mild temperatures for the season", notes Meteo France in its report, but the organization also emphasizes"the passage of many disturbances and several stormy episodes". Storm at sea, shit on the road ?!

Consequently, "in France and during the month, the rainfall was in excess of more than 60%"and"sunshine was below normal over most of the country". This could have limited the appeal of motorcycles and scooters, especially the 125s often considered utility vehicles….

Let us rejoice, it is not. But be careful all the same: sales volumes are still low at this time of the year and the performance of different manufacturers is still evolving with the arrival of new models (and junkyard of old ones).
