Market reports - The 125s stimulate the motorcycle market in May 2015 - The motorcycle market is boosted by the 125

The 125 cc were released in May: their sales in France jumped + 16.4% compared to 2014. Conversely, larger-displacement motorcycles and scooters were less efficient (-5.9%) . The French market is finally flat (+ 0.8%). Balance sheet.

The motorcycle market is boosted by 125

The month of May 2015 had four public holidays, one more – Pentecost Monday – than its counterpart in 2014. Taking into account the 17 working days in May 2015 and the 19 days of activity (from Tuesday to Saturday), against 19 and 20 respectively in May 2014, we could expect a drop in sales of motorcycles and scooters…

By studying the data compiled by the Auxiliary Automobile Association (AAA), Site realizes, however, that French dealers were not idle last month: motorcycle registrations increased by + 0.8% compared to last year (reread our).

The weather conditions can partially explain this good performance: "started warmly with a peak of heat during the first fortnight, the month of May then saw a clear cooling", notes Meteo France in its climate report. But it has never been cold !

However, if we add to these beautiful temperatures a "rainfall deficit of more than 30%" and a "sunshine close to normal over most of the country", we get very good driving and sales conditions (weather) !

Also tempted by interesting new products, tiny credit rates and tempting promotions, customers have fallen in numbers for 125 cc: 5,283 motorcycles and 125 cc scooters took to our streets last month (i.e. only 200 less than in April).

One brand in particular is boosting the sector: Honda, whose sales exploded in May by + 76.6%, which earned it first place in the ranking. Much less dynamic (+ 5.9% all the same), Yamaha is second, far ahead of Piaggio (-18%).

Despite its slight increase (+ 6.2%), Peugeot should be wary of Sym (+ 11%) and Mash (+ 29.3%) who are following it very closely. Suzuki (+ 4.8%) and MBK (+ 14.4%) take advantage of the decline of Kymco (-9.9%) to overtake the Taiwanese.

The increase is accentuated this month: while the 125 cc are improving, the "over 125" are declining. However, the correction for working days (-5%) does not make it possible to erase the drop of -5.9% observed in large cubes in May (unlike the -11% of days when concessions are open).

Compared to April 2015, nearly 2000 units are missing! As if the French bikers had their heads – and their wallets – elsewhere … On the roads perhaps, they traveled on the handlebars of their "good old" big engine, who knows ?!

Still first in sales in this sector, Yamaha shows a slight decline (-5.6%) while BMW (+ 14.2%) climbs to second position ahead of Honda (-7.8%), Kawasaki (-15%) , Suzuki (-16.8%) and Harley-Davidson (-24.7%).

Seventh in the month of May, Ducati achieved the best growth in the table (+ 26.9%) and largely dominated Triumph (-11.1%) and KTM (-5.3%) … not to mention Aprilia ( + 16.2%) whose very disappointing volumes narrowly secured it last place in the Top 10.
