Market reports - The motorcycle market is still slipping - The motorcycle market is still slipping

With 22,927 registrations last February, the French motorcycle market is down -26.8% compared to last year. All brands are affected, except perhaps Piaggio, which blurs the tracks with its tricycles ! Balance sheet.

The motorcycle market is still slipping

The French motorcycle market suffered a further drop in sales in February 2009: -26.8% compared to February 2008 (read). But the most optimistic will have noted that the year 2008 was a leap year…

In February 2008, dealers thus benefited from an additional day to bait the customer: 21 days of opening compared to 20 last month. Likewise, the prefectures had remained open one more day: 21 working days in February 2008 against 20 last February..

But these uncertainties in the calendar – which represent a drop of around 5% in activity – are not sufficient to explain the difference observed between February 2009 (22,927 registrations of motorized two-wheelers of "125 cc and more") and February 2008 (31,336)…

As in January, the weather was not the most encouraging. In addition, two-wheelers – especially Japanese – are seeing their prices go up while cars are more and more sold off. Would motorcycle purchases be postponed, when the sun and the summer sales reappear? ?

The first two months of the year were, however, "positive" for Yamaha and Honda, which are at the top of the ranking: their market shares are increasing by more than 2 points each – they stand at 19.35% and 16.12 % -, despite the decline in their sales.

Over the same period, Kawasaki also improves its PDM in France but to a lesser extent (9.37% since January 1, 2009) while Suzuki is slowly raising the bar. Nevertheless, the fall in sales of Suz ‘(-31.9%) remains more pronounced than that of the whole market (-26.8%).

We note that only Jonway and Gas Gas are now showing truly positive sales progress: exit Honda and Peugeot! Will spring allow Harley-Davidson (-2.6%), Ducati (-8.2%) or Triumph (-12.1%) to turn green? ?
