It works for motorcycles in France

Market reports - Things are going well for motorcycles in France -

With 19,582 motorcycles sold last October, the French market for motorized two-wheelers over 50cc increased its sales by 9.8% compared to last year. And for once, the progression is evenly shared between 125 and large cubes.

In October 2007 (23 working days), 19,582 motorcycles were registered in France. This sum represents an increase in sales of motorized two-wheelers – over 50cc – of 9.8% compared to a month of October 2006 (22 working days) already remarkable for the French market (read).

After admiring the models on the podiums of the Mondial du deux-Roues which took place at the beginning of October at Paris Porte de Versailles, (read and), the French were therefore numerous to present themselves in the dealerships.

Another notable fact because relatively rare, the 125cc and large cubes achieve almost the same score: respectively + 9.7% and + 9.8% compared to their registrations in October 2006 !

Side 125 therefore, 10,416 motorcycles and scooters were sold in France in October 2007 against 9492 in October 2006. The Xmax continues its beautiful escape: 823 immats last month against 507 for the Burgman and 484 for the S-Wing !

At the end of the first ten months, 102,587 "125" two-wheelers (in fact, we consider the segment of vehicles with a cylinder capacity greater than 49.9cc and just below 125cc, often 124.9cc) have were therefore sold in France, an increase of 6.3% compared to 2006.

Among the big cubes, the month of October 2007 was just as satisfactory, with a total of 9,166 two-wheelers over 125cc registered, bringing the cumulative sales since January 2007 to 106,723 vehicles, against 104,676 between January and October 2006.

We note in particular the revival of the Street Triple (268 sales) which allows Triumph to seize the 5th place of manufacturers in France, of which Suzuki took the lead ahead of Yamaha, Kawasaki and Honda..

Market 125: 10,416 units (+ 9.7%)

Among the 125 last month, the two great Japanese suffered … However, Yamaha and Honda each have a good card to play: the former has the French bestseller 2007 – the Xmax has 8,696 sales since January! – and the second has just launched its new spearhead – the replacement S-Wing of the Pantheon -.

However, the competition is fierce in the 125 sector and the good performance of their respective "leader" of the range does not manage to erase the rise of their competitors within the Top 10 manufacturers or that of "others", small but numerous (+ 51.1% last month)

Thus the French number one (Yamaha) ends its 10th month with a drop in sales of 15.9%, while the world number one (Honda) ends its month of October with a decline of 16.4%.

Between the two Japanese – much closer to Yam than to Honda – is still Piaggio, with 1,734 immats to be credited for October 2007, i.e. a minimal increase of 3% compared to October 2006 which, let us recall, had a working day less than last month

The best selling Italian is the MP3 125 with 381 copies sold. Launched a year ago, the three-wheeler from Pontedera proves that it has its place in the top-of-the-range 125 segment … It is also getting out of hand with the Satelis (384) and the Varadero (382 ).

The new Piaggio XEvo is placed just behind the MP3 with 375 immats, while the model it replaces – the X8 -, bowed out at the last place of the Top 100 of monthly sales by model (see the Top 100 opposite in "Deepening").

In October 2007, Peugeot Motocycles grew at the same rate as the 125 market as a whole, so that its market share remained identical to that of last year: 7.26%. Added together, the sales of its standard Satelis and those compressed reach 621 copies, which places the French scooter on the 2nd step..

The direct competitor of the Sochaux manufacturer recorded 507 sales of its Burgman – it is indeed Suzuki -, and totaled 620 immats in October 2007. If the volume is lower than that of the French (756), its progression has nothing to do with: + 47.6% for the Hamamatsu firm, which clings to its 4th place in the ranking of cumulative sales since January…

Behind, MBK increased its registrations by 23.2% while Sym exploded hers by 93.9%. Perfectly illustrating this other battle, the GTS sold 202 copies against 175 for the Skycruiser. However, the French remains ahead for the month of October 2007: 478 sales against 413.

Finally, Daelim registered 378 vehicles including 174 S2, 14th in sales by model of 125, tied with the Aprilia Atlantic. Kymco fell slightly (-6.1%) with 262 licenses and Aprilia reinvested the Top 10 with 261 licenses. Followed by Keeway (209 sales), Sky Team (198), Jonway (185), Gilera (132), Baotian (117), Yiying (106), Hyosung (104), KTM and Revatto (both 101).

Market over 125: 9,166 units (+ 9.8%)

For the "big cars" also, the month of October proved to be satisfactory. Already last year at this same period, the sector recorded an exceptional increase of 22.2%. This year, the over 125ccs ended their 10th month with an encouraging + 9.8%. But that’s just an average…

Like September (read), Suzuki and Honda had a disappointing October: respectively -1.6 and -1.9% of sales compared to October 2006.

The French leader in "over 125" barely reached the mark of 1,800 registered vehicles and its Bandit 650 lost ground on its competitors: 390 sales against 443 for the Fazer and 508 for the ER-6. Also handicapping, the GSR only achieves 214 sales: the pseudo-B-King look will not have seduced in France…

Fourth in the manufacturer’s ranking, Honda has recorded its 7th consecutive month of decline! In the monthly Top15 sales by model, only three Honda appear: the Hornet is 5th with 288 units sold (threatened by a small English!), The CBF1000 abs is 10th with 146 units (beaten by the FZ1, 186 immats) and the Deauville is 12th with 139 sales (beaten by the BMW R1200RT, 142 immats).

However, Honda’s decline was limited to a low -1.9% last month. The 2008 novelties (CB1000R, DN-01 but also the new CBF600 and Transalp) will they allow the winged brand to take off its sales in France? Response in a few months on Site !

Modeling its progress on that of the sector, Yamaha last month sold 1,639 two-wheelers "more than 125cc". Among them are in particular the inexhaustible Tmax, by far the best seller in maxiscooters (263 immats), the FZ1 again best seller in addition to 750cc (186) and the Majesty 250 (117).

But with regard to the segment of mid-capacity roadsters, it is the green Ninjas that prevail on Japanese tuning forks! Kawasaki places its two roadsters in the first two places in sales for October 2007: the Z750 with 528 sales and the ER-6 just behind it with 508 units..

As a result, Kawa achieves the best progress among "major" manufacturers: + 38.9% compared to October 2006, which brings the increase in its registrations since the beginning of the year to + 6.1% then that his compatriots are all in the negative.

Kawasaki Motors Europe announced today "the achievement already acquired of the sales target of 100,000 Kawasaki in Europe this year"."Since the creation of a single European headquarters 5 years ago, sales have increased steadily and the launch of many successful models has therefore enabled this objective to be achieved.", continues the manufacturer, who believes"more than ever to a very bright and promising future for Kawasaki in Europe" !

Point of view increase in speed, Triumph is however far ahead of Kawasaki. With an explosion of its sales of 143% last month, the Englishman climbs to 5th place in the monthly ranking of manufacturers with a total of 503 registrations.

Main cause of this tremendous leap: the Street Triple, which sold 268 copies last month and gives the Hinckley brand a glimpse of a good end of the year … on condition that the factory can keep pace some orders !

Behind the British this month, BMW accuses again a decline in its sales: -14.3% compared to October 2006. The Bavarian presented last week in Milan its main innovations for 2008: "GS on all floors" , from the "fake" 650 to the revamped 1200 via the 800 and the Adventure, Behème consolidates its image of "roule-toujours" (read). German bikers will surely appreciate but the French ?

In seventh position last month, Harley-Davidson continues its journey: + 9.5% compared to October 2006, the American retains its market share and records a nice increase of 14.3% over the first 10 months. Will the arrival of the XR1200 in the spring of 2008 allow the Milwaukee firm to shift into high gear? "Wait and see".

For the first time this year, KTM recorded a negative score: -6.4% compared to last year. However, the Austrian crossed the milestone of 4000 registrations in October (4004 to be exact), which he had not reached in 2006 (3947 registrations at the end of December, read) !

A feat that Piaggio achieved last month: the Italian therefore happily exceeds its 1,500 sales from 2006 to the end of October 2007: 1,752 sales, including 226 last month. Pontedera’s scooters therefore beat Borgo Panigale’s motorcycles once again: Ducati sold 211 two-wheelers last month. Would the tifosis save to afford the new Monster 696 and 848? (read)
