No improvement for the market this summer

After a cool, gray and sometimes even ugly month of June – heavy rains, high winds and falling hail! -, July and August 2013 were more pleasant in France. But this summer, long awaited by the entire population, did not put a smile on the face of French motorcycle dealers….

However, the sunshine has been very generous over the past two months. Temperatures were high in July, accompanied, it is true, by inevitable thunderstorms. But in August, let’s not be afraid of words, the driving conditions were perfect.

Bikers therefore had no excuse not to take out their motorcycle, wear out their tires, chain kits, pads, housings, fairings, etc. On the other hand, very few of them took advantage of the "summer vacation" to change motorbikes….

Sales of motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc – "motorcycles" – did not in fact exceed 25,000 units in July and August 2013: 24,886 to be exact, which represents a drop of -8.7% compared to summer 2012 (read our)

From a purely statistical point of view, we observe that the number of working days was scrupulously identical: one day more in July 2013 compared to July 2012, but one less in August 2013 compared to August 2012 … null: 44 to 44.

By inspecting the calendar, we note that Sunday July 14, 2013 did not impact the attendance of concessions, unlike July 14, 2012 which fell on a Saturday. It is also possible that August 15 – a Wednesday in 2013, a Thursday last year – slowed down activity less this year….

Despite this, registrations of new motorcycles and scooters continued to decline in France. The 125 cc, in particular, recorded two new drops (-11.1% in July and -17.8% in August) which only moderately moderate the drop observed since January 1: -22.3% at the end of August !

No jealousy since all the major players in the sector have seen their sales plunge since the start of the year. We only note a sudden jump from Honda in July (+ 10.9%), which however does not prevent Yamaha from regaining the lead of the 125 ranking at the end of August..

Still fourth in July (-17.7%), Peugeot suffered a severe -40.9% in August and fell to fifth position this month behind Sym … The Lion concessions are not idle, however: the Metropolis is in full launch !

The motorbikes and scooters licenses of "more than 125 cc" are experiencing an evolution parallel to those of their youngest: -2.7% on the seventh month then -8.9% on the eighth … Their decrease is limited to – 11.7% over the entire eight months compared to 2012.

In the Top 10 heavy-duty manufacturers this time around, some have managed to improve their scores compared to last year. This was the case in July for Suzuki and Harley (+ 8.7% and + 9.2%), but above all for Kawasaki and Triumph (+ 19.8% and + 17.2%). In August, it was the turn of Honda and KTM (+ 3.1% and + 4.7%) to appear in "green" … and against all !
