Monthly reports - Motorcycle and scooter market: the 125 are out of control, the big cubes are holding up - Page 1 - Introduction

Very turbulent from a weather point of view, the month of March 2018 logically disrupted the motorcycle and scooter market: for the first time this year, sales of 125 cc fell (-4.2%) and that of big engines have settled down (+ 0.6%). Site explains why in its new monthly report in 7 complete pages.

Meteo France’s assessment is clear: "during this particularly gloomy month of March, winter played an extension with frequent disturbed passages and late episodes of snow". And naturally, the Site’s assessment is also crystal clear…

The very low temperatures recorded at the very beginning and then in the middle of March 2018, accompanied by heavy snowfall (!), Forced motorcyclists and "scootomobilists" – B permits, fans of 125 cc scooters – to leave their two -wheels in the garage.

As a result, the motorcycle market (motorcycles and scooters over 50 cc), which had grown strongly in January and February 2018 (respectively and Vs 2017), experienced a marked slowdown: 15,673 vehicles found buyers in March 2018, compared to 15,765 in March 2017 (-0.6%).

How to explain this slight braking at the very end of the first trimester? The winter weather of last month, as we have seen, considerably limited the attractiveness of motorcycles and scooters while the beautiful month of March 2017 had conversely pushed customers to the dealerships.

Le Journal moto du Net observes in passing that the months of March 2017 and 2018 both had 22 working days (Monday to Friday) and 23 concession opening days (Tuesday to Saturday): no rebalancing is therefore necessary. to study the evolution of sales.

A year ago, we also witnessed the complete renewal of the ranges of motorcycles and scooters so that they comply with the Euro4 emission standard. The avalanche of new products had boosted activity in March 2017 … and in return limited that of March 2018: not everyone offers themselves a new vehicle every year !

Despite an increase in sales of + 40% compared to the good month of February 2018, the 125 cc sector failed to match its score of March 2017: the 3,815 registrations recorded last month form a slippage of -4 , 2%.

As always, the brands are not "housed in the same boat": within the monthly Top 10, Honda, Piaggio, Kymco, KTM and Mash regress while Yamaha, Peugeot, Suzuki, Orcal and Sym progress, sometimes enormously !

On the side of large cubes (more than 125 cc), sales jumped by + 69% between February and March 2018, so much so that they slightly exceeded last year’s score: 11,858 registrations to 11,784 (+ 0.6% therefore). Which doesn’t mean the builders had a quiet third month…

The top quartet, in particular, saw its sales drop: very little for Yamaha, much more for Kawasaki, slightly for Honda and quite a bit for BMW. Behind Harley-Davidson opened the throttle and Triumph gave it back, KTM accelerated slightly and Suzuki quite frankly, Ducati braked and Royal Enfield exploded !
