Monthly reports - Motorcycle market: May makes the big cubes and defeats the 125 - Page 1 - Big up, small down

Like last year, the month of May was beneficial for large-displacement motorcycles and maxiscooters (+ 10.3%), but "bad" for 125 cc motorcycles and scooters (-5.2%). This fifth month confirms the trend observed since the start of 2017. Figures, graphs, trends and analyzes in our new MNC monthly report.

Demonstrations, capricious weather, strikes, fears of gasoline shortages: whatever the reasons, the French had shunned the 125 in (-9.4% Vs). The big cubes on the contrary had taken advantage of the retrofit and three additional working days to bait customers (+ 14.3%).

This year again, the dealers have not been idle since May 1 and 8 have fallen on Mondays, days which are traditionally off for them. Compared to last year, motorcycle and scooter shops even opened one more day (22 Vs 21).

For their part, the prefectures – which record registrations and allow the Site to study the motorcycle market every month – have worked as many days (20). The raw figures can therefore be studied without any correction.

The weather factor, always difficult to take into account, is perhaps a little less so in this report: "after a rainy first fortnight, May 2017 was marked by summer temperatures in the second part of the month", observes Meteo France . The bikers demotivated by the rain finally postponed their purchases by a few days. No shortfall here either.

Among the 125 however, if registrations increased by around 300 units between April and May 2017, they fell by almost as much compared to last year (-5%). Always first, Honda had a very good fifth month (+ 12%), unlike its distant pursuers Yamaha (-14%) and Piaggio (-16%).

The brands in the middle of the table are doing particularly well: Kymco loops at + 8%, Mash + 16% and Sym + 24%. But the volumes are not very important and, just behind, we see red (purple on MNC): Peugeot -21%, MBK -26%, KTM -4% and Suzuki -39%…

On the large-engine market (more than 125), immates also increased by around 300 units compared to April … and four times more compared to May 2016 (+1175, or + 10.3%). The majority of the witnesses are this time in green: dark green for Yamaha and BMW (+15 and + 19%), lighter for Kawasaki and Honda (+10 and + 9%).

Also in form, Triumph reached the top 5 (+ 13%) ahead of its more placid cousin Harley-Davidson (+ 1%) and Ducati all fired up (+ 52%). The fourth Japanese, Suzuki, continues to fall (-8%) as KTM leaps (+ 28%) and Royal Enfield shines (+ 15%).
