BMW unveils new Boxer twin engine on prepped motorcycle
The shape is not lacking in originality: BMW reveals the prototype of a future large-displacement, air-oil-cooled Boxer engine through a motorcycle preparation unveiled in Japan by Custom Works Zon. Explanations.
Yuichi Yoshizawa and Yoshikazu Ueda, founders of the Custom Works Zon motorcycle preparation workshop located in Shiga (Japan), caused a sensation in early December during the 27th edition of the Mooneyes Show – an event dedicated to car and motorcycle customization – by unveiling their latest project: the Departed.
- MNC special file :
It was not only its line inspired by, its unconventional front axle or its spectacular 21 and 26-inch (!) Milled aluminum rims (!) That appealed to the 15,000 visitors, but its engine: a new flat -twin air-oil cooled, mated to the usual BMW shaft and cardan transmission.
"The centerpiece of the machine is the prototype of a brand new Boxer engine," confirms BMW Motorrad, which has entrusted Custom Works Zon with the task of promoting the latest addition to its Boxer family through this preparation. In MNC’s memory, this is the first time that a motorcycle manufacturer has lifted the veil on a new engine in such a roundabout way !
"It was a great honor and a challenge to build a motorcycle around the prototype of such a spectacular new boxer engine", assures Yuichi Yoshizawa, for whom the operation is very interesting from a media perspective. Impossible indeed to evoke this new Boxer without referring to his Departed: blessed bread for business !
An 1800 cc twin ?
Regarding the specifics of this new Boxer, BMW remains for the moment miserly with information and is content to mention details evoking its "engines built until the end of the 1960s" such as the chrome sleeves on the top of the cylinders placed at dish. The manufacturer does not mention either cubic capacity or performance…
"Further details on the engine and its possible future use will be communicated later", specifies the brand from beyond the Rhine to cleverly maintain the suspense … A "little game" that the marketing department of BMW masters to perfection !
Some clues give food for thought, however, such as the inscription "R18" on the back of the saddle, which could refer to a 1800 cc engine. This large displacement is also subtly suggested in the BMW description, which refers to a "large volume engine suspended in the frame".
Recall that the current air-oil-cooled flat-twin of the BMW range – that of the – cube 1170 cc, against 1254 for the new liquid-cooled Boxer unveiled this year on the and. A 1800 cc twin would be the highest displacement on a Boxer to date.
What is the advantage of such a unit volume (900 cc per cylinder!)? Despite the Euro5 standards to come in 2020, engine manufacturers could easily extract a good hundred horsepower and significant torque (greater than 150 Nm) and available very early. In addition, a 1.8 liter block will flatter the ego of "bigger is better" followers … like American bikers, for example. !
However, MNC has only one reason for such an engine: to propel a custom-type motorcycle, followed by other variants likely to appeal to American motorcyclists. That is exactly the strategy adopted by BMW with the Nine T, now available in five versions (standard, Scrambler, Pure, Racer and Urban G / S).
In view of the high-end positioning with dynamic tendency of the German manufacturer, the Journal moto du Net would not be surprised to see soon unload a custom chic and a nothing sporty "Power Cruiser" style, close in the mind of a certain !
