It’s a certainty: the all-new 3-cylinder engine designed by Yamaha will power not only the new roadster, but several other types of motorcycles. For the, this engine could for example serve as the basis for a hypothetical new TDM…

A new TDM at Yamaha ?

Unchanged since 2005 (when it notably adopted a six-speed gearbox, an aluminum frame, a 43 mm fork and more powerful and assisted brakes), the TDM 900 has clearly been put to "sleep" by Yamaha (read in particular our). A complete remodeling, both mechanically and aesthetically, would therefore not be a luxury and on this point, Luca Bar’s project is rather coherent..

And what is this project? Install a fork crown with a windshield, a half-fairing and two rigid cases to transform the new MT-09 roadster into "new TDM" (read in particular our).

The TDM having always navigated between two categories (roadster and trail), the idea is not crazy: it would be enough for Yamaha to increase the travel of the suspensions of the MT-09 and to install a handlebars more raised and curved. (flat on the MT-09) to "de-radicalize" inexpensively its new sporty roadster.

On the mechanical level, the modifications could there also be satisfied with the union minimum: the new 3-cylinder 847 cc with Cross Plane setting being announced as powerful, available and torquey (83 Nm of torque), it seems on paper perfectly capable to respond to multiple uses. The crest of Iwata could possibly rework the injection to boost its raises in anticipation of duo rides.

To the writing of Site, we would not spit on an adjustable bubble, a two-stage saddle, a larger tank (14 liters on the MT-09), a central stand to maintain the chain and one (or even two). storage compartments in the fairings returns: a priori equipment easy to install and very pleasant in everyday life !

Lighter, more efficient … and why not less expensive ?

Admittedly, their implementation would generate overweight and an additional cost, but insofar as the MT-09 is announced at only 188 kg all full facts (without ABS) and that its price could be contained under the bar of 8,000 euros (read), this "Next Generation" TDM could remain within the most reasonable limits: between 205 and 215 kg and under the bar of € 9000, for example…

Knowing that the current TDM 900 in its GT version (with suitcases, screen, hand guards and deflectors) weighs 223 kg and that it sells for € 8999 while it is the 2010 vintage, admit that it is not there would be no photo! Not to mention the pleasure and engine performance that separate – at least we hope so! – the slightly expansive 86 hp twin and the new 106.2 hp 3-cylinder !
