At the start of the year, BMW completes its new flat twin range with the traditional sport-touring variant. On this occasion, the traditional designation RS (from the German "Reise-Sport", literally"sport-travel") is replaced by an international plus ST for …"Sport Touring"! CQFD.

Apart from this small departure from Bavarian traditions, this R 1200ST takes over the entire engine and gearbox assembly of the R 1200RT (read). It therefore develops 100 horses in France and 110 in the free world. The cycle part, the geometry, the suspensions and the brakes, are also identical.

The steel trellis frame is modified to receive a new design, say … surprising. But we will be careful not to make a final judgment before seeing it in person because the photos are sometimes misleading. But one thing is certain: we cannot say that this bike looks like all the others !

Besides the aesthetics, only the handlebars, which define a sportier position, differ from the RT, as does the simplified equipment which allows the dry weight to be reduced to 205 kg instead of 229.

The R 1200 ST therefore has a power-to-weight ratio close to that of the R 1200 GS but what was very impressive for a trail will be much less so for a sporty road. We can therefore wonder about the positioning of such a machine on the French market..

In short, the R 1200 ST appears characteristic of the Germans who have all the attributes of a sports car, but who are more of a long road car. The comfort is thus particularly neat: manually adjustable windscreen, adjustable driving position, saddle height and adjustable handlebars. It can of course receive luggage and the entire line of BMW accessories. To hold the 205 kg weight, the equipment is simplified with for example an optional center stand … Hopefully BMW will not adopt bad Japanese habits !

The R 1200 ST is available in three colors: Sydney Blue Metallic, Piedmont Red Metallic and Granite Gray Metallic. These colors are associated with another color for the front mudguard and the upper part of the fairing: light magnesium metallic or dark graphite metallic.

It will be available in concession on March 17, 2005 at a price of € 13,200.
