News - New for 2015 Intermot Cologne: the BMW S1000RR goes wild! - The BMW S1000RR goes wild in 2015

After pushing Japanese sports motorcycles to their limits, the S1000RR is in turn forced to evolve so as not to be overtaken. On the 2015 program: bodybuilding session, weight loss and brainstorming ! Presentation.

The BMW S1000RR goes wild in 2015

It may well keep its special look, the BMW S1000RR is undergoing profound changes for the next 2015 season, much more than two years ago (read our). The sleuths will have instantly noticed that if the German bomb retains its distinctive asymmetry at the level of the headlights, it reverses it, just to mark the blow. !

"The low beam is now on the right and the main beam on the left. In addition, the asymmetry has been knowingly reduced in the lower part of the two headlights. Their contours come closer to each other", describes BMW to the attention of mirauds (who may not have seen that the air intake was enlarging?!).

The entire fairing is subtly but undoubtedly remodeled: as MNC had noticed this summer thanks to the beautiful beast, the rear part is indeed more slender, the front one is relieved of the deflectors and the shoe is more closed. But on to more serious things…

Pilots who considered the S1000RR lacking in power, especially at high revs (?!), Will be relieved to learn that the new 2015 model, unveiled as planned at the Intermot stand in Cologne, sees its maximum power increase by 6 horsepower for reach the dizzying sum of 199 horsepower !

And that’s not all, since the BMW engine manufacturers have at the same time significantly widened the range of use of the maximum torque, "almost fully available in the rev range from approx. 9500 (112 Nm) to 12000 rpm (113 Nm)", they assure.

To do this, the Munich engineers notably reworked the cylinder head, shortened the intake tubes and brought the throttle butterflies closer to the cylinder head, conferred a rounder profile on the intake cams, lightened the intake valves by 2 grams part and adapted their springs accordingly.

New S1000RR: 199 hp for 204 kg

The exhaust has also been revised, as evidenced by the new exhaust line which does without a plenum chamber and loses in the process no less than 3 kg. Much larger than the old model, the new "rear" silencer is supposed to emit a deeper and fuller tone. We can’t wait to hear that !

At the center of the attention of many bikers, the engine was not the only point of improvement: "the new RR has been sharpened thanks to a frame characterized by a new lighter structure offering an optimized interaction between stiffness and flexibility", welcome the Germans.

Still made up of four molded aluminum elements incorporating the "carrier" engine, the perimeter frame has been redesigned and equipped with a new rear part. The swingarm pivot has been lowered by 3mm and the wheelbase lengthened by 8mm "to further improve traction while increasing precision and fine-tuning the feel of the road", explains BMW.

The geometry of the front axle has also been refined: the caster angle has been reduced by half a degree (23.5 ° therefore) and the offset of the fork tubes has been reduced by 6 mm, so that the the new S1000RR measures 96.5 mm (-1.5 mm according to BMW, -2 mm according to MNC …).

According to their clever calculations and the tests conducted by their test pilots, handling and precision are on the rise. For the same purpose, the handlebars would have gained 5 mm on each side: what more easily swing the "Double R" in the pif-paf? To check !

The original delivered suspensions have been fine-tuned, but MNC gives you the dark stories of file stroke, spring stiffness and positive / negative travel … More important no doubt: BMW Motorrad teaches us that the option ( ex works only) DDC will be offered on the new S1000RR.

Until now reserved for the only one, the electronically controlled suspensions are indeed adapted to the new Superbike "base" of the mark with the propeller. Interconnected with drive modes, DDC settings can be customized over a range from -7 (soft) to +7 (firm).

New options, new gadgets

As standard, the S1000RR has three driving modes: "Road" and "Race" give access to maximum power, while the "Rain" setting restricts the bike to … 187 hp (previously 163) and 108 Nm: enough to get good lap times despite the rain !

To go as quickly as possible – in the dry this time – the "païlote" of the future BMW S1000RR 2015 can afford two "Pro riding modesThe first, well known to BMW racers, is called "Slick" and should allow them to exploit the full potential of their racing tires..

The ultimate mode, called "User", now allows you to fully configure your machine: "not only with regard to the two proposed acceleration laws and, therefore, the reaction to acceleration", describes" Behem ", but"also the tuning feature of Race ABS (delivered as standard, editor’s note), DTC dynamic traction control (option which, unlike the standard ASC, takes into account the degree of inclination of the motorcycle, Editor’s note) as well as the DDC controlled suspension"(option).

By offering the Pro piloting modes, the biker – necessarily very sporty – also benefits from two new gadgets: the automatic start function (Launch Control) and that of speed limiter (Pit-Lane-Limiter) whose characteristic sound due to switching off the ignition is described as impressive"by the Germans.

Bikers who still dare to venture out on the open road at the controls of their Munich missile – produced in Berlin – would do well to fall for an option never before seen on a sports car: electronic cruise control, more efficient than "speedwarning" appeared in 2012.

Note in passing that the HP Pro shifter, essential on the circuit and pleasant on the road as it facilitates up and down (!) Gears, unfortunately remains optional. BMW reports, however, that "the new S 1000 RR responds as standard to the wishes of many drivers running on the circuit who want a so-called reverse gearshift grid".

"The selector has an additional housing for the control rods, which allows the system to be adapted in no time.", specifies the brand, proud that"the fruitful exchanges existing with the "BMW Motorrad HP Race Support customer competition" department lead, among other things, to adaptations of this type".

But what’s left of the HP4 ?

The new S1000RR also benefits from the work done on the other motorcycles in the range. Thus, the Superbike snatched the onboard network of the S1000R, which allowed the adoption of the fully electronic acceleration system that makes the throttle so soft … but also those of the cruise control, the HP shifter Pro and "User" mode … Thank you who ?

On the other hand, "by using the "sensor box", a block of sensors from the BMW HP4, it was possible to significantly optimize the use of the DTC dynamic traction control and, above all, the anti-wheeling protection detecting the separation of the front wheel". Strongly a first try … on the hilly course of Portimao, if possible !

The adoption of a smaller battery (7Ah) "saved about 1 kg", estimate the Germans. By subtracting the 3 kg gained on the pot, the manufacturer calculates that his sportswoman lost 4 kg: according to BMW still, the weight of the S1000RR 2015 is therefore limited to 204 kg … that is to say 3 more than its main rival, the Kawasaki ZX-10R.

The new BMW Superbike also stings at the HP4 – which, phew! – its instrument cluster. "However, for an optimal presentation, the liquid crystal display (LCD) has 640 segments on the new RR instead of 320 previously.", wishes to clarify BMW.

"As for the analog tachometer, it is equipped with a new dial that is even easier to read.", emphasizes the manufacturer. Very close to the old one, it actually allows the pilot to spot at a glance if his needle is in the bottom (a big 4 always indicates 4000 rpm), mid (8) or high (12) regimes !

The red zone also remains perfectly delimited: the maximum speed of 14,200 rpm has also not changed compared to the old model. The price of the motorcycle, it is feared, may increase … Offered "from" € 16,500 the day after its, the S1000RR was offered this year at € 17,250.

What will be the price of this S1000RR in 2015 (available in red / white, black or "BMW Motorsport") and when will it land in dealerships? BMW Motorrad France has promised to keep us informed: stay tuned !
