The Telelever sacrificed on the altar of compactness

"To design a compact motorcycle, as we wanted the new R1200R to be, the Telelever posed a problem: this system takes up more space than a traditional fork, which becomes problematic with the new generation of water-cooled Boxer since You have to fit the cooling radiator (s) on the front, "says Sebastien Lorentz, Marketing Director of BMW France, to Site..

2015 BMW R1200R: the key points

  • New "liquid" Boxer with 125 hp and 125 Nm (+15 hp and + 6 Nm)
  • Perimeter frame in steel tubes
  • +8 kg and +20 mm long
  • 45mm inverted fork
  • Partially combined ABS, ASC anti-slip and 2 drive modes as standard
  • Configurable TFT instrumentation
  • +350 euros (13,400 € in 2015)

Optional: ESA Dynamic, DTC anti-slip, Pro driving modes, shifter, LED night lights …

Asked about the very spacious stand of the German manufacturer in Cologne, between the R1200R, its new sport-road version "RS" and the new generation of S1000RR (two motorcycles to discover quickly on MNC: stay connected!), This young mechanic enthusiast – and two-wheeled dragster! – enlightens us on the reasons which pushed BMW to abandon the Telelever, for the second time on a motorcycle of the Boxer range after the .

"On the Nine T, it’s not really the same thing. It was above all an aesthetic choice because this bike is particularly intended to be transformed and replacing an inverted fork is simpler than a Telelever", continues -he.

"But on the new R1200R, it is mainly a question of space. Unlike the GS and RT, which are longer, higher but also more streamlined, it was not possible to integrate everything perfectly on the R1200R with the engine at water".

On the novelty, the water radiator takes place in a central position, while the air intake circuit has been redesigned to obtain a "particularly compact frontal silhouette", explain for their part the German designers..

By the way, the front panel trades its "classic" round headlight against an oblong optic (optionally equipped with H-shaped LED night lights), which is reminiscent of that of the .

Sporty fork and brakes !

More compact in appearance despite its lengthening of 20 mm (from 2145 to 2165 mm) compared to the previous model (the wheelbase increases in the same proportions, from 1495 to 1515 mm), the R1200R 2015 is therefore the last motorcycle of the Boxer range to receive the "Flotte-twin".

As on the GS and RT, this torquey and full of punch engine develops 125 hp and 125 Nm of torque, but its acceleration would be more muscular thanks to the new air intake circuit and the silencer redesigned compared to the road "Kollossales".

Following this transplant, the "R" therefore abandons the efficient "made in Munich" front axle and instead adopts an inverted fork with 140 mm of travel with 45 mm sleeves. At the foot of this fork described as "inspired" by that of the, 4-piston radial brake calipers are responsible for stopping the 231 kg announced with 90% of full, or 8 kg more than the .

At the rear, the Paralever Evo single swingarm incorporates a shaft and cardan transmission, as in 2014. It is connected to a central shock absorber with 140 mm travel, the preload of which is adjustable via a dial on the standard versions. without ESA (with the electronic suspension system, the pilot intervenes on the preload from the left stalk).

The 17-inch spoked rims (120 mm and 180 wide) "are inspired by the design and lightweight construction of the wheels of the S1000RR", assures the manufacturer to the propeller. As on the last generations of R1200GS and R1200RT, the frame is of perimeter type in steel tubes, integrating the engine as a supporting element.

According to BMW, this "new" chassis would have been developed specifically for the R1200R, even if MNC does not note any visible differences with that of its "cousins" … As standard, the R1200R receives two driving modes ("Rain" and "Road"), ABS combined from front to rear, a TFT matrix instrumentation screen inspired by that of the K1600 with three different display modes and ASC anti-slip.

As an option, it can be fitted with the "DTC" traction control derived from the S1000RR, which is more efficient as it is informed by angle sensors. Included in the "Pro riding mode" option, this sporty traction control comes with two additional driving modes: "Dynamic" and "User", a mode that allows you to customize several parameters such as the responsiveness of the ESA and anti-skating.

Still optional (see the huge list of optional equipment below), the BMW Boxer roadster can also receive semi-active suspensions (continuous adjustment of the damping laws), the hands-free starting system "Keyless Ride ", the Pro shifter (system allowing up and down gears without disengaging) or an engine guard (see photos of the white and red model) and a central stand.

Cannibalization in sight ?

The rear part, lower by 60 mm at the level of the passenger seat and shorter by 120 mm, clearly contributes to reinforcing the modern and sporty aspect of this roadster with its positioning hitherto rather "sport-classic" oriented..

Now raised and angular, the rear shell still includes grab handles, but the significant shortening of the rear part has a fatal impact on the dimensions of the passenger seat….

In general, the 2015 R1200R appears much more dynamic and technological, with a touch of sportiness largely assumed by its Superbike-style peripherals. .

So much so that MNC comes to wonder if this quasi-institutional motorcycle at BMW does not come to walk on the flowerbeds of its close cousin R nineT, equipped with the old "Flat air", or even the sporty roadster with the bestial 4-cylinder in-line from the SBK…

Because these three motorcycles box overall in the same category in terms of displacement and price positioning: 12,950 euros for the, 13,400 euros for the new R1200R (an increase of 350 euros) and 15,000 euros for the. Enough to make the biker hesitate in concessions ?

"It is a possibility, indeed", confides to MNC Marcel Driessen, general manager of BMW Motorrad France, moreover perfectly aware of the attachment of certain "Behemists" to Telelever, and therefore of their probable mixed reactions to its abandonment. on the R1200R.

The French leader nevertheless believes that these three motorcycles each deliver in their own way "a different interpretation of the dynamic and modern roadster seen by BMW" and that they meet distinct expectations and needs..

Asked by MNC, “Herr” Driessen expects the new R1200R to be available “in February 2015”. It will be available in three different versions: "Base" (blue paint, gray tank cover, black frame and brake calipers), "Style 1" (the most typical "sport" with its white paint, signature "R" large format, red frame, golden calipers and its steel tank cover) and "Style 2" (metal gray paint and frame, gold brackets, steel tank cover).
