MNC revealed yesterday to its readers the existence of. Stunned by its successful appearance, we evoked the idea that the Motor Company dares to "electrify" to meet the needs of the bikers of tomorrow … Good pick from the Journal moto du net: this project is indeed a reality and is called LiveWire !

From Twin Cam tumbled to electric motor !

"As part of an ever more daring product development policy, Harley-Davidson will be offering consumers in the United States starting next week to ride and give their opinion on the motorcycle, to decide on the future of this very first Harley-Davidson electric model ", reveal the Americans in the introduction of this very unexpected LiveWire project, the first electric motorcycle" Made in Milwaukee " !

Who would have believed it: Harley-Davidson, the most traditional motorcycle manufacturer, becomes the first "big" actor in the two-wheeler scene to take up the challenge of the electric motorcycle

If the approach is indeed not surprising on the part of manufacturers focused on technological innovation like, KTM and or Yamaha and its f, it turns out to be much more unexpected from Harley-Davidson…

Harley is a brand whose aficionados are so attached to the specifics – both aesthetic and mechanical – that the on the Electra and the Trike has caused a mini-cultural revolution … Under these conditions, the electric motor, one would have thought that the builder didn’t care as his first rocker. Big mistake !

"America is a land of reinvention," said Matt Levatich, president and chief operating officer of the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “And, like America, Harley-Davidson has reinvented itself many times in its history, inviting its customers to be part of every step of its evolution. Project LiveWire is a moment of significance, based on the involvement of our customers, in the history of Harley-Davidson ".

"The LiveWire Project is more like an electric guitar than an electric car", specifies Mark-Hans Richer, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Harley-Davidson: "the LiveWire Project is an affirmation of the innovative policy of our company and our brand ".

According to the manufacturer, this electric motorcycle stamped with the HD logo would offer "new" driving sensations thanks to an "exceptional" acceleration capacity and "an extraordinary sound", compared by Harley to that of a "fighter plane" ! In the video below, MNC lets you judge if this comparison is really appropriate….

A future suspended from welcoming bikers …

The Milwaukee manufacturer plans to quickly provide a LiveWire to 30 American dealers (from June 24 in New York), then to extend the experience to Canada and Europe from 2015. The objective is to collect information, opinions and suggestions through tests carried out by lambdas bikers, "Harley-ists" or not, in order to then decide on the direction to follow with this LiveWire.

Clearly, if the bike and especially the approach appeal, Harley-Davidson will transform this project into commercial reality. Conversely, in case of categorical rejection, it is likely that the LiveWire is temporarily "disconnected".

"Because electric vehicle technology is evolving rapidly, we are pleased to benefit from the opinions of bikers during the LiveWire Project Experience to understand the keys to the success of this constantly changing market", confirms Mark-Hans Richer.

The preservation of the environment is naturally one of the arguments which decided the Motor Company to put "the mitts in the grip", since the manufacturer assures with philosophy that "strong of 111 years of success, we address the motorcyclists in terms generational, with the concern to preserve the environment for the next 111 years ".

74 hp and 75 Nm of torque

Innovative also in terms of the cycle part (for a Harley in any case!) With its inverted fork, its perforated swingarm pad and its mono-shock absorber in oblique position, the LiveWire would transmit 74 hp and 75 Nm of torque to its wheel rear via belt

Typed roadster, this motorcycle with successful lines and truncated rear part would be limited by construction to 150 km / h and its autonomy would not exceed … 80 km. Too limited a field of action, even for an electric motorcycle with an essentially urban vocation.

As for the price, it is naturally not indicated, since the motorcycle is still only at the design stage..

A project however well advanced, as evidenced by the finish which seems irreproachable, the instrumentation worthy of a digital tablet or the attention to detail, such as the chrome treatment of the lower part of the engine..

Speaking of engine, precisely, the big question (and likely source of concern for Harley-ists) is now whether the electric is intended to supplant the thermal in the range in the more or less near future….

"No worries," HD specifies on the official LiveWire site: "We love the Harley-Davidson V-Twin and we continue to believe that our traditional projects have a solid future. LiveWire is just one of the ways we are going. explore to expand and diversify the Harley-Davidson biker family ".

A reassuring and not surprisingly assertion, because at Harley we are perhaps "connected" to the possible needs of tomorrow, but certainly not "disconnected" from the market and current expectations. !
