Recently unveiled in the form of official sketches on the Motorcycle Journal du Net (read), the 2011 Suzuki GSR 750 has made its appearance at the Cologne Intermot as expected..
Heir to the GSR 600 and a direct competitor of the Kawasaki Z750 and Yamaha FZ8 (read our), the great innovation for 2011 Suzuki naturally takes over the engine of the GSX-R 750: an in-line four-cylinder of 749 cc compressed to 12.3: 1 and liquid-cooled, the power and torque of which are not yet known.
However, given the potential of the legendary "seven and a half" (read in particular our and our), the GSR 750 should have no trouble competing – or even overtaking? – the 106 horsepower and the 78 Nm and 82 Nm of torque respectively displayed by the Z750 and the FZ8.
Especially since the block of the Gex is reworked at the level of the camshafts and the double butterfly injection to offer this GSR 750 immediate availability and undoubtedly more sustained in low-revs !
Attack of the Clones…
Be that as it may, Suzuki promises constant power and torque, despite the efforts made to deal with polluting emissions. The catalytic exhaust is fitted with a SET valve (Suzuki Exhaust Tuning) to increase torque and low and mid-range acceleration.
Our readers will not fail to notice that in addition to an unoriginal overall design because strongly inspired by that of the Kawasaki Z750 reference, the format and lines of the silencer of the GSR 750 recall those discovered on a certain Yamaha FZ8.
This quasi mimicry is confirmed on reading the technical specifications: as for the Kawasaki Z750, the Suzuki is satisfied with the minimum union side cycle part. The frame and the rectangular swingarm are made of steel (aluminum for the Yamaha FZ8) while the gold-coated 41mm inverted fork and the mono-shock are only adjustable in preload..
Likewise, the 310mm rotors are clamped by Tokico axially mounted calipers and a single piston caliper for the 240mm rear disc: while lovers of fine parts and sophistication might be paying their price, the purchasing power, he should certainly appreciate this approach likely to contain the price below 8,000 euros (7,999 € for the FZ8 and 7,499 € for the Z750).
On paper, this new 2011 Suzuki GSR 750 has no shortage of assets to tease the references on the dynamic level, especially as its chassis values appear very similar, or even similar to the two other Japanese roadsters: its wheelbase is 1450 mm (1460 for the Z750 and the FZ8), its caster angle of 25 ° (24.5 for the Z750, 25 for the FZ8) and its weight stopped at 211 kg all full (216 with ABS), i.e. exactly the same as the Yamaha and some 15 kg lighter than the Kawasaki.
On the practical side, however, the GSR 750 could surprise: the volume of its gasoline tank of 17.5 liters (against 18.5 for the Z750 and 17 for the FZ8) promises a decent range. The driving position seems sporty but without excess, and it would even be possible to slip a U-type lock under its pretty passenger seat..
In addition, as often with Suzuki, the instrumentation appears clear, readable and complete: speed, tachometer, gear indicator engaged, engine temperature, fuel gauge, clock, odometer, two daily trips, nothing seems to be missing. ‘call !
This GSR 750 should be available in March 2011 in black, white or red.
Equipped with warnings and a coded key, it will be able to receive an optional ABS equipped with "a new and very compact electronic control unit", indicates Suzuki..
