After Honda, Kawasaki and KTM, it is the turn of Triumph and Yamaha to bet on the development of small sport motorcycles of 250 cc: the English unveiled a first sketch of a future Daytona 250 at the EICMA in Milan, while that the Japanese are currently presenting at the Tokyo Motor Show an advanced prototype named R25.

250 cc sports bikes: Triumph and Yamaha hit the track

Without going so far as to talk about effervescence, the segment of motorcycles with displacement between 250 and 400 cc is moving a lot and occupying a growing place in the strategy of manufacturers. Triumph and Yamaha give a new example with more or less advanced projects of very attractive small sports: a 250 cc "mini Daytona" and an R25 with lines modeled on MotoGP’s YZR-M1.

Concerning the British bomber, very little information and no photo of the completed model have been communicated by the manufacturer of Hinckley: Triumph simply announced that it was discussing the subject during its press conference at the Milan show, by presenting a sketch of the motorcycle to support his claims.

Nevertheless, one can logically think that this Daytona 250 will take – at least in part – the same technical basis as the recently surprised during development tests: a water-cooled single-cylinder type engine, a non-inverted fork with a diameter content, a square section swingarm and a single front brake disc.

On the other hand, the sketch revealed in Italy lets glimpse imposing spars suggesting the use of a perimeter-type frame in aluminum on this Dayto 250, while the seems rather to favor the use of a classic tubular frame – probably in steel.

Knowing that these two motorcycles will a priori be produced in India and that a price "placed" appears at the top of their specifications, we can assume that the second option will be the one chosen by the English decision-makers. Unless Triumph tries a more "premium" approach with its little sports car? To be continued !

Finally, we note that the front part of this small Supersport closely resembles that of the, with the notable exception of the bubble which appears larger on the future novelty of Hinckley. The very raised half-handlebars above the triple tree (as on the triple tree) and the passenger grips suggest that this potential star would be generally less radical than its predecessor..

Yamaha R25: Rossi Approved !

As for the Iwata coat of arms, if one relies on the R25 prototype on display at the moment on the, the approach would be more radical: the lines of this 250 refer directly to those of the M1 of Lorenzo and Rossi, while its single-seater saddle, the anodized pistons of its brake caliper and its "racing" handlebars confirm its sporting orientation.

Nicely designed, this bike also differs from its English competitor by its "concrete" nature: even if Yamaha would like to point out that it is an "experimental vehicle", this R25 appears at a very advanced stage of development and even already showing off in a promotional video (below) with Valentino Rossi in the role of "test driver-VRP" !

"This is a brand new motorcycle injected with the pedigree of Yamaha’s racing department," assures the nine-time Grand Prix world champion as the perfect representative of the Iwata brand.

Technically, this R25 mini-sports car is powered by a liquid-cooled 249 cc 4-stroke twin that takes place in a tubular chassis. Note the visually significant length of the aesthetic curved swingarm, as on the M1. However, it is not certain that the final version will keep branches as long, insofar as the constraints in terms of traction are obviously much less than in .
