Exactly one year ago, motorcycles and scooters of "125 cc and more" (excluding 50 cc mopeds, therefore) once again surprised Site: despite a really uninviting weather, their sales increased by + 7.5% compared to November 2018 (disturbed by the demonstrations of the yellow vests, for the record).

In November 2020, the same motorcycle market turned the tide: -7.5% in an eleventh month mainly marked by the re-containment in France with the aim of breaking the second wave of Covid-19 and in the hope – finally disappointed – to spend a happy holiday season.

Yet less restrictive than the first, this not-so-funny new period has pushed more French people to leave their main residence: "more than five million people, or one million more than in the spring, during the first confinement" , estimates an Odoxa-CGI survey for our colleagues from France Info and France Bleu.

The two-wheelers so appreciated for the "motorcycle-work-sleep" would they all remained in the garage of their exiled owners? Likewise, would their brand new replacements have been shunned and started to collect dust in the showroom of deserted concessions? It is not so simple.

Second confinement: more exiles, less teleworking

Indeed, "concerning teleworking (supposed to be applied to the maximum, Editor’s note) only 9% of the working people respected it full time, it is two times less than during the first confinement", reports the previously cited survey. The trips to the office would therefore have been more numerous than in the spring…

The mechanics of motorized two-wheelers had more work in November than in March-April: tires, pads, oil filters continued to be consumed. Sales representatives also had more work than in the spring, while being less in demand than last year….

On the one hand, the strong upturn in sales this summer as well as the dynamic re-entry have exhausted some stocks. We can hope that the poor performance of several pillars of the market at the end of the year will therefore soon be offset by the resumption of deliveries … To be checked in the MNC balance sheets for the coming months.

On the other hand, many new 2021 products presented on the lounges Site encouraged customers to wait a few weeks or months to acquire a nicely redesigned or completely redefined frame, necessarily flanked by the Euro5 mention … therefore accepted longer in some city centers in the future ?

The 125 cc which had passed the milestone of 50,000 registrations at the end of October, only reached 53,100 units a month later. The 2,787 immats registered in November 2020 represent a drop of -23.9% compared to November 2019 and a drop of -42% compared to October 2020. But the results fluctuate greatly between brands.

In general, however, between the changes of time, atmosphere and temperature, holders of the A1 or B license seem to have moved away from small motorcycles and thermal scooters … in favor of small scooters or large cars electric? One thing is certain: it is not the three-wheelers accessible to motorists who replaced them (-29.3% compared to November 2019).

The "more than 125 cc" also suffered this eleventh month: while they had exceeded 100,000 units at the beginning of October, the large cubes in November "only" increased by 5,291 registrations, i.e. a drop of -20.8% compared to November 2019 and a drop of -41% compared to October 2019.

In the Top10 of large-displacement manufacturers this time, the results are a little more homogeneous: eight recorded more or less marked drops in their sales compared to last year, while two progressed, but thanks to many model registrations. Euro4…
