2019 MotoGP Malaysian GP report and results (Viñales winner)
Maverick Viñales takes his second victory this season thanks to a breakaway ahead of Marc Marquez at the 2019 MotoGP Malaysian GP, which allows him to recover the 3rd place in the provisional. Dovizioso completed the podium after a great fight with Rossi. Disappointment for Quartararo and Zarco, respectively 7th and on the mat … Summary, best moments in video and results.
Marc Marquez was not mistaken: the defending champion named Maverick Viñales as the favorite in Malaysia, due to the consistency and speed of his racing pace. The Yamaha official seemed more dangerous to him than Fabio Quartararo, despite the incredible speed of the beginner qualified in pole position.

Viñales, aware of having a card to play after his fall on the last lap in Australia, had therefore expressed an extremely simple strategy: get a great start and escape to enjoy the qualities of his Yamaha, very comfortable. in fast curves. To believe that the grip problems of the M1 disappeared during this overseas tour !
And that’s exactly what the Spaniard did, after overtaking Jack Miller on the first lap who shot the holeshot from an outside line! Starting off very well from his second place, "Mack" took the lead without looking back while Marc Marquez made his way to quickly climb back from his 11th place, even if it means "jostling" Jack Miller in the process..
Back in second place, Marc Marquez however understood that the game would be difficult: Viñales galloped ahead with half a second in advance, with the new lap record in the race. Marquez’s efforts were not enough: "I stayed focused, in case Maverick made a mistake", confides, quite disappointed, the HRC pilot who is 3.059 seconds late on arrival.
Rossi invigorated, Quartararo in difficulty
While Viñales rushes towards his second success – after that in the Netherlands – his teammate Valentino Rossi shows signs of regained competitiveness: the "Doctor" fights fiercely in the Top 5 with the Ducati of Dovizioso and the Suzuki of Rins.
This fine battle sheds light once again on the superiority of the Ducati V4 over the Yamaha inline 4-cylinder: while Rossi overtakes Dovizioso under braking eight laps from the finish, the latter easily recaptures him in the straight line which follows thanks to to its advantage of 12 km / h (327 km / h against 315 km / h) !
Rossi will ultimately fail three tenths behind the vice-world champion, despite everything happy to finish in fourth place after a worrying bad run: 8th in Aragon and Thailand, fall in Japan and 8th in Australia. The No. 46 had not scored such big points since mid-September and his 4th place in San Marino !
congratulates on a magnificent victory!
First and fourth represents a strong day at the office for !
– MotoGP (@MotoGP)
This second group of the race was also made up of Morbidelli and Quartararo, slower than expected for their team’s home race. The French beginner, qualified on pole, tumbled in the hierarchy on the first lap and fails to reproduce his pace of testing…
Fabio, who aspired to win his first victory, is ultimately unable to invite himself on the podium, or even in the Top 5: the Nice finish in 7th position, not without having wickedly widened in the last lap while trying to double his box neighbor !
His legitimate disappointment is palpable: "El Diablo" returns to the box looking defeated, disturbed by this – relative but unexpected – poor performance. With the exception of his crashes in Britain and Australia, the rookie of the year had always finished in the Top 5 from the Czech Republic, securing four podiums in eight races..
Rins pushes Zarco to the fall
Jack Miller, for his part, had a complicated race: the leader for a brief moment, the Australian often lost speed over the laps. The Australian, however, did not fail to put up a good resistance to several drivers, in particular Rossi or Zarco, who maintained his position on the grid (9th).
The height of bad luck for Miller: Rins slammed into him at the rear – on the angle – in the entrance to Turn 15, snapping the wing of his GSX-RR in this violent impact caused by a poor appreciation of the No.42 ! The Ducati-Pramac rider finished in 8th place, while Rins remained until the finish in the wake of Rossi in 5th place.
Another highlight of this Malaysian Grand Prix: that between Joan Mir and Johann Zarco, which unfortunately ends with the fall of the French driver! Johann was tightening towards the rope in turn 14 when Mir tried to infiltrate under his fairings: his Honda immediately slips under the impact…
The Spanish rookie gets a "Tour Long" penalty on the last loop for his responsibility in the fall of the No.5, who fortunately was not injured. A missed opportunity for Johann, who could reasonably claim to reach his goal of "Top 7"…
Zero points for the LCR team…
Double disappointment at Honda-LCR since Cal Crutchlow also went to the mat on the previous lap in turn 15, all alone like a big guy. Note also the fall of Andrea Iannone on Aprilia…
Jorge Lorenzo for his part finished in 14th position, between Aleix Espargaro and Mika Kallio, with 34.215 sec behind the winner. The best for the Mallorcan, even if it seems difficult to rejoice in such a position for a crack of his caliber on the world champion motorcycle !
It should be noted that most of the drivers set off on medium-medium tires, except Quartararo, Marquez and Abraham who opted for a medium-soft combination. Dovizioso and Miller also diverge with a soft tire front and rear.
The point in the championship: Marquez does not "brake" !
This penultimate race of the season allows Marc Marquez to climb to his 17th podium (!), And to continue his spectacular series of first and second places. Remember that the Honda official has only one hitch in his season: his fall in Austin.
Catalan – pushed by Viñales after running out of gas in his lap of honor! – does not rest on its laurels so far: the proof this Sunday with its big attack during the first laps, even though it had flown to the high side the day before while trying to "suck the wheel" of Quartararo in qualifying !
Always eager to improve, Marquez also tested in free practice a new rear brake in the form of an additional lever placed above its clutch, on the left hand (circled in red above). The n ° 93 explains not to like the brake "with the thumb", placed on the right of many competing motorcycles (the Ducati, in particular).
The Yamaha actuate the rear caliper on their side via a discreet little lever on the left hand, placed behind the clutch lever (Fabio actuates it with the index finger above above). Objective of these remote brake controls: to allow the use of the full-angle rear brake in right-hand turns, where it is difficult to operate the brake pedal.
In the provisional standings, Andrea Dovizioso is now 139 points behind his rival Honda and sees the identity of whoever follows him change: Maverick Viñales takes advantage of his victory to steal third place from Alex Rins, who has been declining since his victory in England.
Quartararo will not finish 3rd, death of Munandar…
Danilo Petrucci retains 5th place in the standings with four short steps ahead of Fabio Quartararo. The French rookie sees his slim hopes of finishing his first season third as his gap over Viñales drops to 29 units.
A good performance in the final can still allow him to pass Petrucci, or even Rins, who has a 22-point lead. However, be careful not to be surprised by the experienced Valentino Rossi, who will play his all-out in Valance to fill the six points that separate him from Quartararo !
All these drivers have also expressed their deep sadness over the death of young Indonesian driver Afridza Munander, tragically passed away at only 20 years old in the first lap of the Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup (IATC) race which took place on Saturday at the Sepang circuit. . MNC associates with the grief of his family and loved ones…
See you from November 15 to 17 on the Ricardo Tormo circuit for the Valencia GP, 19th and last race of this 2019 MotoGP season.
