2019 MotoGP San Marino GP report and results (Marquez winner)
Marc Marquez wins his 77th Grand Prix race – his 51st MotoGP – after following Fabio Quartararo’s private Yamaha throughout the San Marino GP. The French debutant lost in the last lap, not without having put up a remarkable resistance ! Viñales, kept at a distance from this breathless duel, completed the podium far ahead of Rossi. Debrief and results.
The 95,212 spectators were waiting for a feat from the local hero Valentino Rossi, it is finally another Yamaha rider who caused a sensation under the sun of Misano: Fabio Quartataro! The "Rookie" delivers his most incredible performance at the San Marino GP – only his 13th race in MotoGP -, where he held the controls from the third to the last lap !

- MNC of September 11, 2019 :
Yamaha rider Petronas took the lead after an observation lap behind Maverick Viñales, who turned his pole position into a holeshot when the lights went out. The two M1s were immediately joined by Marc Marquez’s Honda, which made up for its slight delay at the start with great strides.
This trio quickly moved away from the second group made up of Franco Morbidelli, Pol Espargaro and Alex Rins. Valentino Rossi did not gain any position thanks to the first laps: the Italian remained stuck in 7th place for a long time, stumbling in particular against a very consistent Pol Espargaro.
The Spaniard has had a knife between his teeth since he achieved the best qualifying in a MotoGP KTM with 2nd place! The n ° 44 is better than the 3rd place of Johann Zarco in the Czech Republic, and this in the dry when the French had reached the front row in the wet. Promising for Katoche !
The start of KTM
All the fires are not orange for all that for KTM: the Portuguese beginner Miguel Oliveira leaves very quickly to the fault, Hafizh Syarhin is transparent (15th to one minute at the finish) while Zarco composes somehow with his penalty of three positions which earned him the start of 11th place.
Valentino Rossi will finally put six laps to get rid of Espargaro: at this stage, the n ° 46 is already five seconds behind the private Yamaha of Quartararo, solid leader ahead of Marquez! Nothing to show off at home, especially as the "Doctor" still has in front of him the M1 of his student Morbidelli…
Fabio Quartararo and Marc Marquez meander through to a final with two protagonists: the two fastest men in the race relegated Viñales to almost three seconds, while the third group took six seconds in ten laps. !
Five laps remaining!
Who are you backing, or ?
– MotoGP (@MotoGP)
Bad news for Ducati: Franco Bagnaia made a mistake with 16 laps to go, while his teammate Jack Miller was 9th. Then it was Alex Rins who lost the front of his GSX-RR four laps later in turn 4 and had to retire.
The Suzuki rider definitely lacks consistency, he who brilliantly won the previous race in Great Britain – as well as the opening round in Qatar – but now has three white results (Assen, Sachsenring and Misano).
Rossi meanwhile overtakes Franco Morbidelli to return to 4th place. Six laps from the finish, Ducati test driver Michele Pirro set off in the gravel where he was joined shortly after by a decidedly very disappointing Cal Crutchlow this season. Marquez begins to be pressed on Quartararo…
Marquez’s revenge, Quartararo’s satisfaction
The penultimate lap always starts to the advantage of Fabio Quartararo: the beginner can already be delighted to have completed 24 laps ahead of the seven-time world champion, without making the slightest mistake. !
Marquez waited until the last lap to go on the offensive braking from the straight line. Quartaro replied immediately and took control, before being overtaken again by the official Honda. The n ° 20 hangs on and gives everything in the last sector…
"El diablo" moves away as the turn 14 approaches in the hope of "poking" his rival from the inside … but Marquez is perfectly aware of this attack and locks the door: the Yamaha Petronas has not enough room to squeeze inside !
The reigning champion learned the lesson from his two successive failures on the last lap in the previous two races, when Dovizioso taxed him in Austria on his mighty Ducati before being emulated by Rins on his devilishly maneuverable Suzuki. !
Fabio immediately relieves the throttle and straightens to avoid a collision in this tight right-hand bend, leaving Marquez to take some irremediable lengths towards victory: the Honda official wins the race with 0.9 seconds ahead of his young rival, while that Viñales completes the podium within 1.6 seconds.
When a beginner stands up to the defending champion on a private motorcycle !
"I think I had a good race," said Fabio Quartararo at the finish. "I gave 100% and I finished really very close to victory. It’s a great feeling because it’s the first time that I have fought with Marc until the last lap, when he has a long experience. of this situation".
Your podium heroes!

The Frenchman perfectly masks his legitimate disappointment at having passed so close to the goal, aware of having consolidated his access to the small group of MotoGP cracks this Sunday. How not to rejoice in such a status at only 20 years old, when the private M1 gives 500 rpm to Rossi and Viñales motorcycles ?!
Valentino Rossi for his part fails at the foot of the podium, … 12.660 sec from the winner. The 40-year-old Italian is ahead of Franco Morbidelli and Andrea Dovizioso, who limits the damage on this track noticeably unfavorable to the Ducati: the No. 4 had yet won there last year but this time takes 13.744 sec in the helmet.
Pol Espargaro finally finished in 7th place ahead of Mir, Miller, Petrucci and Zarco. Note that the French was one of the only drivers to have opted for a soft tire at the front, when the majority of the field started in medium-medium..
The other rider who imitated his approach is Jorge Lorenzo, who pushed the challenge to the point of also installing a "soft" on the back of his official Honda. Failed bet for the Mallorcan, who only appears in 14th position, 47.247 sec from Quartararo.
The return of n ° 99 is definitely laborious, in addition to being punctuated by small spicy exchanges with Alberto Puig: the HRC team manager believes for example that Lorenzo must show "courage and will" to return to the forefront. , while the latter claims to have tried everything on the RC213V at the risk of seriously injuring himself…
MotoGP Championship update
Marc Marquez takes his spectacular advance in the provisional to almost 100 points thanks to his seventh victory in thirteen races (more than 50%!). His advantage over Andrea Dovizioso equals his race number – 93 -, also well helped by the modest harvest achieved by his Italian rival in these last two events….
Unhappy victim of a collision with Quartararo in Great Britain, "Dovi" has scored only ten points (6th) on this circuit which has been a problem for Desmosedici since Friday. Marquez has at the same time garnered 45 units, true to his line of conduct this season: either 25 pts for victory or 20 pts for second place !
"I am human, my team may tell me to stay calm and think about the championship, it is obvious that losing two races in a row on the last lap upset me", nevertheless confesses the HRC driver, questioned about his state of mind during his magnificent duel with Quartararo.
"I probably had something to prove here, even if the main thing is to be there in all circumstances: when the Yamaha are fast, we are there. When the Suzuki go fast, we are there and when the Ducatis dominate, we are there. are there too, "Marquez rightly points out. And when you have to roll up your sleeves to remember who’s boss, guess who’s still there ?!
Petrucci returns to the top three
Small satisfaction at Ducati: Danilo Petrucci took advantage of Alex Rins’ third white result to steal third place in the provisional, with … 124 points behind Marquez (the equivalent of 5 wins!). With 149 pts on the clock, the Suzuki rider finds himself under threat from Viñales who follows him with 134 pts.
Valentino Rossi, 6th, is five lengths behind his Spanish teammate and no less than 146 on Marquez. Abyssal! The transalpine always precedes Fabio Quartararo, who consolidates his 7th place ahead of Miller and Crutchlow thanks to this fourth podium in MotoGP (2nd in Catalonia, 3rd in the Netherlands and Austria and 2nd in San Marino).
His compatriot Johann Zarco raised his head – a little – by overtaking Miguel Oliveira in the provisional classification: the French team climbed to 17th place thanks to his 11th place in Misano, associated with the poor performance of the Portuguese beginner (16th after a fall).
Manufacturer and team rankings
Honda also largely dominates the manufacturers’ standings with 281 points against 221 for Ducati, 215 for Yamaha, 174 for Suzuki, 85 for KTM and 57 for Aprilia, which only fielded one driver in Misano following the forfeit due to an injury to the arm. Andrea Iannone after her third crash during practice.
The "Team" classification, on the other hand, does credit to the official Ducati team (333 pts against 308 for Honda-Repsol), illustrating an obvious reality: if Dovizioso and Petrucci regularly shine on the GP19, only Marquez manages to extract the quintessential of the RC213V !
Head for Aragon from Friday
No respite in MotoGP: the next race, the GP of Aragon in Spain, is scheduled for next week. This 14th round of the 2019 season will be the penultimate in Europe before the Pacific tour and its four overseas events (Thailand, Japan, Australia, Malaysia), followed by the traditional Spanish final in Valencia.
Endurance fans will have a double dose of motorcycles next weekend as this GP of Aragon will take place at the same time as the Bol d’Or at Castelet. Stay connected !
