Road rallies - Rallye de l'Ain: Julien Toniutti in front of the Corsican armada! - The race: night stage

The race: night stage

The night stage is much shorter than the day one (a grand tour of 98 km and one of 75 km), with four stages to complete to establish the classification of the rally..

On the first pass through Challes, Julien Toniutti drives home the point with the best time of 1’25.25 ahead of Stephane Riccirelli (1’28.26) and Paul-Henri Sebe (1’28.36). In the middle of the Corsican riders, Nicolas Pautet (Yamaha FZ8) slammed the fifth fastest time in 1’29.64 while Nicolas Derrien (BMW F800R) finished seventh in 1’30.25, five full seconds behind Julien … The leader of the provisional of the championship is in bad shape !

In the fast Corveissiat, Julien decides to let his wings grow and achieves a magnificent 2’07.12 ahead of Paul-Christian Piazza (Husaberg 570) in 2’10.42 and Nicolas "Crazy" Pautet () in 2’11.16.

Nicolas Derrien makes a minor mistake, but ends the special stuck in third gear of his BMW F800R! He will receive a good fifty seconds which will increase his time in this special. And Paul-Henri? Too fiery, no doubt, too much gas, certainly: Tigger flew off on a rapid passage. His motorcycle was seriously damaged but the rider miraculously coped with a slight head trauma (without loss of consciousness) and some contusions….

As if the nail were not penetrated enough, Julien Toniutti strikes again and again obtains the best time in 1’25.10 at the last passage of Challes. Second time for Stephane Ricciarelli in 1’28.09, almost three seconds behind the leader! Paul-Christian Piazza confirms his place at the top level by securing the third time (1’29.14).

In the last passage through Corveissiat, Julien Toniutti’s KTM 990 Superduke signs the 73rd Ain rally as … owner: 2’07.92 ahead of Stephane Ricciarelli (2’10.24) and Paul-Christian Piazza (2’11.12 ).

The return to Cerdon is uneventful, by a link route appreciated by all: the roads of the rally of the Ain, on which the discipline was born a good hundred years ago, are still as great as ever. !

And as usual, until very late at night, many told each other about the race as if they had not done the same…
