New radar warnings: the same … but less precise !
The "new formula" radar detectors (in accordance with the wishes of the Ministry of the Interior) will gradually replace the old ones, deemed too precise and effective by the government. From today, Coyote is updating its iCoyote app for smartphones and all other brands will have to line up before the end of the year.
The "new formula" radar detectors (in accordance with the wishes of the Ministry of the Interior) will gradually replace the old ones, deemed too precise and effective by the government. Starting today, Coyote is updating its iCoyote app for smartphones and all other brands will have to line up before the end of the year. Do speed camera warnings still have an interest? Explanations.
A particularly flourishing market |
Created in 2005, Coyote System has multiplied its turnover by 15 in three years to reach nearly 10 million euros in 2008, when the company stopped publishing its accounts.. It then posted a net profit of 560,000 euros for a turnover of 9.9 million with only 8 employees.. |
"Radar warnings, which are an incentive to break the rules on speed limits, will be banned," said the IRB bluntly on May 11 (read our). Our readers remember that the panicked alarm manufacturers suddenly gathered within AFFTAC to try to preserve their market, before coming into line this summer by signing a protocol with the Ministry of the Interior. 4 kilometers on the highway
This protocol obliges Coyote, Inforad, Wikango, Avertinoo, Eklaireur and Takara to no longer offer "non-compliant" products. The manufacturers of speed cameras can therefore continue to sell their products, motorists and bikers can continue to buy them … but they must be less precise !
Concretely, users will be able to continue exchanging information on the road in real time, except that it will no longer be a question of "precise points" but of "dangerous zones" which extend over 500 meters in town, 2 km outside built-up areas and 4 km on the motorway !
At a time when the precision of Google Maps almost makes it possible to recognize a face – even blurred – in the street, this technological backtracking is surprising … In reality, it is simply a question of preventing motorists and motorcyclists to slow down in front of a radar, then to resume a normal pace adapted to the circumstances.
"Compliant" speed camera warning devices
As of today, Coyote is therefore launching the new "Gueant approved" version of its mobile application iCoyote, available on Apple Store (iPhone), Android Market (Samsung, HTC …), App World (Blackberry), OviStore (Nokia) and Bada (Samsung). This is "the first application to comply with the AFFTAC / Ministry of the Interior protocol," Coyote explains proudly.
Except that with their lack of precision and alerts signaling both accidents, slowdowns, fixed or mobile speed cameras, roadworks, etc., these "new formula" warnings are likely to be much less useful…
