Expected at the Eicma show in Milan, the new Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade 2017 was unveiled in preview at the Intermot show in Cologne. The Japanese giant presented the SP and SP2 versions of its Superbike: a single-seater sharper than ever, based on the "short" RR… Presentation.

With its new Fireblade SP 2017, Honda ensures to take a new step in its philosophy of "Total Control" dear to this dynasty which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To do this, the Tokyo Superbike ended up giving in to the sirens of sophistication and denying certain attributes exclusive to the brand, such as e-ABS (see our).

Far from being a small detail, the abandonment of the Honda electronic ABS – which weighed 10 kg on the scale and 1000 euros on the bank account – in favor of the Bosch system adopted by all motorcycle manufacturers has made it possible to substantial savings. But the new Fireblade is obviously not all about ABS…

The engine ("of which 90% of the parts are new", assures us Bruno Skotnicki, motorcycle press manager at Honda Europe), is controlled by – the pilot still, via – an electronic accelerator, a first for a Honda in-line 4-cylinder . Three driving modes, traction control, anti-wheelie, engine brake setting and quickshifter simultaneously appear !

This was necessary to support the comparison with the competition and, incidentally, to muzzle the 192 horses which in the SP version (single-seater) have barely more than a single kilogram each to move (195 kg fully loaded). In addition to the ABS, the new chassis saved around 1.2 kg, the 16-liter titanium tank (!) 1.3 kg, the battery 1 kg, the engine 2 kg, the titanium silencer 2.8 kg and 100 g additional rims … Now at the cutting edge of technology, the Fireblade SP 2017 is equipped at the same time with Ohlins electronic suspensions and incorporates the essential inertial unit which further refines the work of the assistants by taking into account the angles, pitch and yaw of the bike. Finally, a color TFT instrumentation covers the whole.

The ultimate or “customer-friendly” version of the future Fireblade, the SP2 is visually differentiated by carbon inserts and golden decorative threads, but above all by its forged Marchesini rims. Inside the beast are several improvements like an optimized cylinder head, wider valves, lighter pistons and longer spark plugs, among others. And as if that weren’t enough, Racing kits will also be available !
