Sporty - Suzuki GSX-R 1000: Gextraordinarily yours! - On the track: the genes of Endurance ...

In 2001, the arrival of the GSX-R 1000 set the hypersports category on fire! Slightly behind in the face of the technological advances of its rivals, the Gex has mobilized Suzuki’s full attention and is coming back as sharp as ever ! Road and track test !

On the track: the genes of Endurance…

As a good sportswoman, the Suz ‘calls to take advantage of its potential on the circuit: an invitation to which Site did not fail to respond by taking it to the circuit of La Ferte Gaucher on the occasion of our participation in the excellent FMA Day’s (read) !

Thanks to the invaluable advice of Laurent Brian (6th of the French 600 Supersport Championship 2008 and instructor of the De Radriguez Rider School) and Sebastien Charpentier himself – so long as you do! -, the exercise was instructive on the sporting inclinations of the GSX-R 1000. Intuitive and well-balanced, the Suz ‘offers a recital of good manners: the saddle offering a good latitude of movements, while the box of speed shows unfailing docility and precision !

Speed, engine speed and gear engaged are clearly visible between two curves swallowed drum beating thanks to the flawless stability and the bluffing traction, despite the many revivals in first imposed by the circuit! Suzuki has also added three orange LEDs at the bottom of the complete dashboard (see technical sheet) which gradually light up before the white shift-light. Except that, on the flanged version, the change of gears between the first and the second led is more appropriate…

In the same vein, if the engineers have moved the SMDS control – which allows you to choose between three injection maps while driving – below the left stalk, the accessory is more like the Gogo-gadget (or even the gadget galore. ..) in 106 ch. Although full of torque (11.9 m / kg at 10,000 rpm in Full and 9.6 m / kg at 7,500 rpm in France), the Gex does not really need to lower its power curve on the track dried…

Although quicker to throw at the rope, the Suz ‘does not have the light agility of an Aprilia RSV4 Factory (read our test), but it turns out to be easier to take calmly at a good pace thanks to its less restrictive position and smoother driving character: strengths clearly derived from its harvest of Endurance titles !

Ultra-precise and as if placed on a rail up to the chord point, the GSX-R accepts bleeding downshifts when entering a curve thanks to a well-calibrated anti-dribble. At this precise moment, however, two slight faults appear: despite a quality fittings, the monobloc calipers are too timid when taking the right lever and require to actuate it with conviction to request a power that is still formidable..

Penalizing, because it affects the feeling during heavy slowing down, this relative weakness has fortunately remained constant over the sessions. On the other hand, with its long stroke and high compression ratio, the machine requires a finely chiseled entry into a curve: in case of optimism, the inertia of the mill when gas is released quickly pulls towards the outside! Common to most 1000 cc, the phenomenon requires a minimum of "grip", especially on rapid changes of angle.
