The new Yamaha R1 and R1M 2020 are ready for victory and Euro5
Yamaha is taking advantage of the transition to Euro5 standards to bring significant changes to its R1 and its luxury version R1M. The most sensational Japanese Superbike also offers a line more modeled on Rossi’s MotoGP. Presentation, explanations, prices and video.
Ultra precise and responsive, the is illustrated thanks to its asynchronous "Crossplane" ignition timing, its spectacular line and its excellent power-to-weight ratio (200 hp for 199 kg). MNC’s faith: the queen of Iwata has been at the top since her complete redesign in 2015, with her enjoyable character and her distinct design that pleasantly distinguish her from her compatriots.

The new Euro5 standards provide Yamaha with the opportunity to review several details, while improving its potential already. Its 998 cc 4-cylinder engine notably adopts new camshaft profiles and revised valve opening laws to optimize its fuel efficiency – and therefore limit its pollutant emissions..
With the same objective, its cylinder head is redesigned and its injectors repositioned while its intake valves are brought closer to the combustion chamber. Finally, the pollution control system – which is based on four catalysts – is improved and the silencer receives new elements to "limit the sound volume". Not too much anyway, let’s hope !
All these modifications do not significantly change performance (200 hp at 13,500 rpm and 113.3 Nm of torque instead of 112.4 Nm in 2018) but are intended above all to meet the new certification requirements..
Yamaha took the opportunity, however, to lengthen second gear and improve reliability, with new lubrication ducts on the crankshaft and work on cooling the cylinder head. A last modification not insignificant because the current model tends to heat up a lot in town !
Sophisticated electronics
The R1 is already one of the most advanced motorcycles in electronics, being one of the first to use an inertial unit (IMU) for continuous evaluation – 125 times per second! – its position on several axes in order to calibrate as well as possible the reactions of all its "learned chips" (traction control, ABS, maps, start assistant, management of drift and nose-up and bidirectional shifter).
This new vintage adds a layer (or rather a line of code) through a redesigned electronic accelerator for a better sensation when turning the throttle. The R1 2020 also features a configurable and tilt-sensitive ABS: two modes are now available (BC1 and BC2) in order to adapt the sensitivity of the plant to the conditions..
An engine brake management system is also making its appearance to modulate mechanical resistance according to taste, on three levels of intensity (high, medium and low). Equipment far from useless on the circuit, since the "CP4" produces a significantly stronger engine brake than a "conventional" 4-cylinder.
Yamaha has also changed the way the assistant works at the start and integrated the new functions on the beautiful color TFT matrix dashboard (see photo gallery below). In all, the 2020 R1 carries seven electronic aids systems !
Improved suspensions and brakes
The chassis is also the subject of several avenues of improvement, starting with the fully adjustable Kayaba 43 mm fork which releases new valves now arranged in "laminated" to improve the feeling. The steering damper and rear monoshock also receive new adjustments.
The radial calipers with 4-pistons are equipped for their part with new pads, while the original pneumatic assembly is brought up to date with Bridgestone RS11. Remember that the Iwata Superbike stands out from the competition thanks to its ultra-light magnesium rims and rear buckle. Its 17-liter aluminum tank also contributes to this qualitative quest for lightness..
Last change in size on the 2020 R1: the slight stylistic evolution granted to its distinctive silhouette, as it does not have a headlight at the front (the lighting is provided by two lenticulars in the top of the fairing, under the position lights in the form of thin rows of LEDs). The front part – more stretched – reinforces its aesthetic mimicry with the YZR-M1 of de Rossi and Viñales.
This more fluid design would improve aerodynamic efficiency by "5%", assures Yamaha, which now introduces titanium in the lower part of this fairing to better isolate the exhaust. As in 2018, the 2020 R1 is available in blue or black: a somewhat limited color chart for a motorcycle of this caliber…
YZF-R1M 2020
The YZF-R1M, launched at the same time as the "standard" R1 in 2015, is a top-of-the-range version and geared towards an exclusive practice of the circuit with its carbon fairings, its electronically controlled Ohlins suspensions or its control system. on-board telemetry.
A chic motorcycle, racy but quite expensive since sold – on order – € 5,000 more than the basic R1! Logically, this exceptional model adopts for 2020 all the modifications listed above.
It also receives a new Ohlins "ERS NPX" fork, whose electronic adjustments are optimized. This inverted fork also features a new cylinder containing gas inside its cartridges, which would reduce oil cavitation phenomena..
The constancy of the damping would gain there "significantly", explain the Japanese engineers who also hardened the preload at the rear. Remember that the damping of the R1M evolves continuously electronically, with more or less hardness depending on the mode chosen.
The 2020 R1M also receives a carbon rear shell and a plate with its production number at the top of its tank, two elements that underline its "Premium" nature. Its pampered R1M owners can also receive "specific assistance and advice" during "" days on prestigious European circuits..
The R1M – only available in black and blue – finally offers a link with several applications specifically developed for use on the track, such as the "YRC Setting" application which allows in particular to adjust its electronic settings from a tablet or a telephone. Racing is as easy as a phone call to Yamaha !
The Y-Trac application, for its part, allows data recorded by the motorcycle to be superimposed on Google Maps and thus to analyze turn-turn, engine speed, lean angle, acceleration and electronic assistance activations. Talk to Jeremy Burgess: Rossi’s former Grand Prix chief mechanic didn’t even use a computer !
Price and availability
The new YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M will be available "end of September 2019" and online reservations for the R1M will open on "July 25, 2019". Their price will be € 19,299 including tax for the YZF-R1 and € 25,999 including tax for the YZF-R1M. Remember that the current vintages are traded at prices of 18,999 euros (standard) and 23,999 euros (M).
